cegard/Smart light curtain
6.1
Overview cegard/Smart light curtain
The cegard/Smart light curtain systems are an opto-
electronic device that is used
to detect persons or objects in between the elevator
doors, and
to measure door operational data e.g., vibration, speed
and position.
The cegard/Smart light curtain system is suitable for
center, left and right side-opening elevator applications.
Best performance occurs in dynamic installations where
the light curtain is mounted on the elevator cab doors.
This document contains the technical specifications of the
cegard/Smart light curtain and the installation procedure.
WARNING
Serious health risks
In general, door protection systems do
not provide absolute safety for elevator
passengers passing through the doorway.
They cannot be used as fail-safe devices of
the door mechanism. This safety function
must be provided by other means.
6.2
Features of the cegard/Smart
Ideal for dynamic installations (mounted on cab doors)
Suitable for center and side-opening applications
Multiple criss-cross beams for reliable detection that
are active until doors are nearly closed
High sensitivity to shock and vibration detection
Precise door position information
Optimized elevator door diagnostics
Easy installation

System components
A typical delivery for EU contains components as shown on
the following figure:
1 × Emitter edge (Tx) with a pig tail cable (white plug)
1 × Receiver edge (Rx) with a pig tail cable (blue plug)
2 × Extension cables (each 5 m)
Mounting accessories for an installation on the elevator
door(s) [dynamic application]

A typical delivery for North America contains components
as shown on the following figure:
1 × Emitter edge (Tx) with a pig tail cable (white plug)
1 × Receiver edge (Rx) with a pig tail cable (blue plug)
2 × Extension cables (each 5 m)
Mounting accessories for an installation on the elevator
door(s) [dynamic application]
Additional mounting accessories are available on request.

Light curtain system applications
The infrared cegard/Smart light curtain consists of
an emitter (Tx) and
a receiver (Rx) edge,
both of which have a built-in controller. These two active
parts are electrically connected directly to the cegard/
Smart control unit.
6.5
General operation
The cegard/Smart light curtain systems are supplied as a
pair with an emitter and receiver edge and two connection
cables. The emitter projects an array of infrared light beams
to the receiver. The beam pattern of the light curtain is
schematically displayed in Figure 1.
The light beams emitted from the emitter are sequenced,
one after the other, and pulsed at a specific frequency.
The receiver is designed to only accept the specific pulse
and frequency from its dedicated emitter. This enables
the rejection of ambient light and thus enhances their
robustness in various environments.
Interruption of one or multiple infrared beams triggers
the output of the connected cegard/Smart control unit to
change state. Once the detection field is clear again, the
output changes state again to indicate that the protective
field area of the cegard/Smart light curtain is now "clear".
During door closing, when the distance between emitter
and receiver edges is decreasing the ±1 criss-cross beams
are turned off (switching point at approx. 30 ... 50 mm). The
table below provides the minimum and maximum number
of beams:
