Introduction cegard/Smart
The cegard/Smart provides an elevator door protection
solution that complies with the requirements for
a protective light curtain device according to the
requirements of EN 81-20 (2020) and for
reopening device(s) for Power-Operated Horizontally
Sliding Doors and Gates according to the requirements
of ASME A17.1-2016 / CSA B44:16 and earlier
versions of the Safety Code for Elevators and
Escalators
when installed in compliance with these operating
instructions.
The cegard/Smart consists of:
A cegard/Smart control unit and
a cegard/Smart light curtain to detect persons or
objects between the elevator doors.
The cegard/Smart is designed for and can be used in
center-opening as well as left- or right-side opening
elevator door applications. It is most suitable for dynamic
light curtain installations (light curtain edges are installed
close to the front of the moving door wings or panels).
The cegard/Smart can be used in static light curtain
installations, but not all IoT features / data will be available.
The cegard/Smart control unit:
Performs continuous testing of the cegard/Smart light
curtain.
Monitors the cegard/Smart connected sensors e.g.,
light curtain and
provides a single output that represents the state of
the cegard/Smart system to elevator control.
Provides 4G/LTE connectivity.
This document contains the technical specifications of the
cegard/Smart light curtain and the cegard/Smart control
unit and their installation procedure.
The cegard/Smart control unit tests the function as well
as detects the signals from the light curtain. Depending
on an internal sequencing, the cegard/Smart control unit
either holds the door open, allows it to reverse or allows
it to close.
For correct function, only system components described in
this document shall be used.
WARNING
Door protection systems, such as the cegard/
Smart, do not provide absolute safety for
elevator passengers passing through the
doorway. They cannot be used as failsafe
devices of the door mechanism. This safety
function must be provided by a fail-safe force
and a kinetic energy limiter in the door drive.

Overview cegard/Smart
The Figure 1 shows the principal of the cegard/Smart
architecture. The cegard/Smart emitter (Tx) and the receiver
(Rx) are connected to the cegard/Smart control unit.

Overview
The cegard/Smart control unit communicates with the
cegard/Smart emitter and the receiver. It provides a signal
to the elevator control that indicates when the elevator door
can be closed. It provides 4G/LTE connectivity. The cegard/
Smart control unit regularly monitors the cegard/Smart
components. If a cegard/Smart emitter or receiver fails, the
cegard/Smart control unit sets the output relay to hold the
door open and indicates a fault has occurred (see Chapter
5.11).
