surrenders. Distributors are obligated to ensure
that appropriate recycling facilities are available
within a reasonable distance so that old applianc-

Consumers are entitled to hand in their old ap-
pliances free of charge to a distributor obligated
to accept surrenders in the event the consumer
acquires a new appliance of equal value with an
essentially identical function. This option also exists

In the distance selling branch, the option to have
the old appliance picked up free of charge upon
acquisition of a new appliance is restricted to heat
exchangers, visual display units and equipment
systems with at least one outer edge exceeding
50 cm in length. The distributor is required to con-

surrender up to three appliances of any particular
appliance type free of charge at the collection
point of a distributor, irrespective as to whether
the consumer has acquired a new appliance.
Nevertheless, the edge length of the appliance in
question must not exceed 25 cm.
Consumers are encouraged to adopt waste pre-
vention measures. With regard to electrical and
electronic appliances, this means extending the
service life of the appliance by repairing broken
or defective appliances as well as the selling of

ing them in for disposal.
