7 Operation via a light controller

For operation via a light controller with DMX512 proto-
col (e. g. DMX-1440 or DMX-510USB by "img Stage
Line"), the light effect panel is equipped with 27 DMX
control channels. However, if required, it can be con-
trolled via 24, 15, 9, 6 or 4 channels only. The functions
of the channels and the DMX values can be found on
pages 17 and 18.

7.1 Connection

As a DMX interface, the unit is provided with 3-pole
XLR jacks of the following pin configuration:
Pin 1 = ground, 2 = DMX-, 3 = DMX+
For connection, special cables for high data flow should
be used. Standard microphone cables with screening
and a minimum cross section of 2 × 0.22 mm
a capacity as low as possible can only be recommend-
ed for a total cable length of up to 100 m. For cable
lengths exceeding 150 m it is recommended to insert a
DMX level matching amplifier (e. g. SR-103DMX by
"img Stage Line").
1) Connect the DMX INPUT (15) to the DMX output of
the light controller.
2) Connect the DMX OUTPUT (14) to the DMX input
of the following light effect unit; connect its output
again to the input of the following unit, etc. until all
light effect units have been connected in a chain.
3) Terminate the DMX output of the last DMX unit in
the chain with a 120 Ω resistor (> 0.3 W): Solder the
resistor to the pins 2 and 3 of an XLR plug and con-
nect the plug to the DMX output or use a corre-
sponding terminating plug (e. g. DLT-123 by "img
Stage Line").

7.2 Adjusting the number of DMX channels

To be able to operate the light effect panel with a light
controller, the DMX start address (
the number of DMX channels must be adjusted. The
number of DMX channels depends on the functions
required and possibly also on the number of the con-
trol channels available. Chapter 10.1, pages 17 and
18, shows information about the functions which are
possible for the operation with the following number of
channels: 4, 6, 9, 15, 24, and 27. Select the number of
DMX channels accordingly:
1) Press button MENU (5) so many times until the dis-
play (10) shows
that the next button is pressed within 8 seconds,
otherwise the adjusting process will end.
2) Press button ENTER (7). The number of DMX
channels is shown in a flashing way.
3) Use button DOWN or UP (6) to adjust the number
of DMX channels and memorize it with button
ENTER.
reappears on the display. After 8 sec-
onds the light effect panel returns to the previous
function mode.

7.3 Adjusting the start address

To be able to operate the light effect panel with a light
controller, adjust the DMX start address for the first
DMX channel. If e. g. address 17 on the controller is
provided for controlling the function of the first DMX
channel, adjust the start address 17 on the RGBL-
120DMX. The other functions of the light effect panel
are then automatically assigned to the following
addresses. An example with the start address 17 is
shown below:

7.3.1 Automatic address adjustment

This method is useful when several RGBL-120DMX
units are used and the first light effect panel is to
receive the start address 1:
1) Connect all RGBL-120DMX units via the connec-
tions DMX INPUT (15) and DMX OUTPUT (14) with
each other (
chapter 7.1) and switch them on.
