About This Document

These instructions contain important information on the safe and appropriate
assembly, operation, and maintenance of the PE 5 pressure sensor and how to
remedy simple malfunctions yourself.
Read these instructions completely, especially chapter 2 "For Your Safety"
before you assemble the PE5 and connect the compressed air.

For Your Safety

The PE5 has been manufactured according to the accepted rules of safety and
current technology. There is, however, still a danger of personal injury or damage
to equipment if the following general safety instructions and the warnings before
the steps contained in these instructions are not complied with.
Read these instructions completely before working with the PE5.
Keep these instructions in a location where they are accessible to all users at all
times.
Always include the operating instructions when you pass the PE5 on to third
parties.
Intended use
Only use the PE5 to monitor pressures for industrial applications in accordance
with the technical information.
Observe the performance limits listed in the technical data.
Intended use also includes having read and understood these instructions,
especially the section "For your safety".
Improper use
It is considered improper use if the PE5
• is used in hydraulic systems or comes into contact with aggressive/flammable
gases or liquids.
Personnel qualifications
Assembly, disassembly, commissioning, and operation of the PE5 require basic
electrical and pneumatic knowledge, as well as knowledge of the appropriate
technical terms. Assembly, disassembly, commissioning, and operation may
therefore only be carried out by qualified electrical or pneumatic personnel or an
instructed person under the direction and supervision of qualified personnel.
Qualified personnel are those who can recognize possible hazards and institute the
appropriate safety measures, due to their professional training, knowledge, and
experience, as well as their understanding of the relevant conditions pertaining to
the work to be done. Qualified personnel must observe the rules relevant to the
subject area and have qualifications according to TRBS 1203.
Safety instructions in this document
In this manual, there are safety instructions before the steps whenever there is a
danger of personal injury or damage to the equipment. The measures described to
avoid these hazards must be observed.
Signal word
CAUTION
Indicates a potentially hazardous situation, which, if not avoided, could result in
minor or moderate injury or damage to the equipment.
The following must be observed
General instructions
• Observe the regulations for safety, accident prevention and environmental
protection for the country where the device is used and at the workplace.
• Do not change or modify the PE5. The manufacturer can accept no liability
claims if these instructions are not complied with or the device is interfered
with; the warranty for appliances and accessory parts will no longer apply.
• Only use the PE5 within the performance range provided in the technical data.
• All settings on the PE5, all assembly and disassembly work, and commissioning
may only be performed by trained personnel.
• Do not loosen any connecting cables or tubing if systems are under voltage or
pressure!
• Do not place any deflection, torsion, or impact loads on the pressure sensor.
• The warning sign may not be removed or damaged (see Fig. 5).
• The pressure measurement in the PE5 can only function properly if you use
connecting cables from Rexroth (see chapter 3 Delivery Contents, Optional
accessories).
During assembly and commissioning
• The warranty only applies to the delivered configuration. It will not apply if the
product is incorrectly assembled.
• Always make sure the relevant system part is not under pressure or voltage
before assembling or disassembling the PE5.
• Make sure that the connected compressed air lines are free of particles and that
no liquids can penetrate into the device through them.
• Only use thread inserts with exterior sealing (max. screw-in depth 9 mm).
• Do not install any obviously damaged devices and exchange defective devices
immediately.
During operation
• Only operate the PE5 under the conditions specified in the respective technical
data and within the stipulated limits. Non-compliance will affect the operational
safety of the switch and may destroy the device or affect its function.
• Immediately exchange the PE5 if any malfunctions occur.
Use of the PE 5 pressure sensor series in explosive areas
The pressure sensors are certified and labeled in accordance
with the ATEX Directive 94/9/EC. They can be used
• in Zone 2 areas where there is a risk of gas explosions; they correspond to the
category II3G and have the ignition protection class Ex nA II T6 X and
• in Zone 22 areas with non-conductive flammable dusts; they correspond to the
category II3D and have the ignition protection class Ex tD A22 IP65 80 °C X.
Observe the relevant Ex guidelines for installation, maintenance, and repair, in
particular EN 60079-14, EN 60079-17 or EN 61241-14, EN 61241-17, as well as the
prevailing national regulations (e.g. in Germany: VDE 0100). Have an electrical
specialist perform installation, maintenance, or repairs in accordance with
TRBS 1203.
Prior to installation, the information on the equipment label must be compared with
the expected operating conditions in order to ensure operation in accordance with
intended use.
If the pressure sensors fail or malfunction for unknown reasons, they must be
replaced.Defective parts cannot be repaired or replaced. Pressure sensors that
show signs of damage must not be installed or must be replaced.
Year of manufacture: The first two digits in the 5-digit date code on the type plate
indicates the year and the last two digits indicate the week.
Please note the following special conditions:
• The permitted ambient and fluid temperature is 0 to +50°C. In areas in which
there is no risk of explosion, temperatures up to 60°C are permitted.
• It must be ensured that an impermissibly high device temperature, which can
occur during brief cyclical pressure fluctuations, is prevented. Limit values are
shown in the diagram (Fig. 11).
• Only operate the PE5 pressure sensor via a power pack with safe
isolation from the power supply (PELV in acc. with DIN VDE 0100-410,
IEC 60364-4-41, EN 60079-14). The electrical circuit must be
potential-free (not grounded).
• A Rexroth CN2 series connecting cable with M12x1 plug and knurl with detent
must be used. The use of other connectors voids the Ex equipment approval.
• Please note that the connectors must not be disconnected under voltage!
• The pressure sensors must be installed in a housing that complies with the
requirements for impact tests and IP protection listed in EN 60079-15 (gas
explosion protection) or EN 61241-0 and EN 61241-1 (dust explosion
protection).
• The compressed air or inert gas to be monitored must be generated and
prepared outside of the ex area.
