Instructions of Use for REF 8, REF 8-S

General
REF 8 and REF 8-S have been developed as environmentally friendly test gases for the
testing of ionization-type and optical scattering type smoke detectors. REF 8 and REF 8-S
have an extended efficiency yielding approximately 20% more tests than REF 7 and REF 7-S,
the predecessors of REF 8 and REF 8-S. REF 8 and REF 8-S can be used in arid and humid
environments at temperatures from -20°C up to +40°C. REF 8 can be used in the temperature
range of 0°C to +40°C; REF 8-S is primarily used at temperatures below 0°C and/or for
detectors reacting only with high smoke concentrations.
Caution: Just like any hairspray or deodorant, REF 8 and REF 8-S contain flammable
substances. Do not smoke, and omit any ignition sources when using REF 8 and REF 8-S.
Do not use for devices with relay contacts that are not hermetically sealed; note the
accessories in the base. Keep out of reach of children! Please read the instructions on the
can. Use only together with dispenser RE6.
Handling of REF 8 and REF 8-S
1.
Remove the cap, insert the can into the dispenser RE6 with the yellow valve on top and
fix everything with the lateral screw.
2.
Press RE6 against the detector during 0.2 to 0.5 s, thereby releasing aerosol.
3a. With ionization-type smoke detectors and old optical scattering-type smoke detectors,
hold RE6 tight against the detector without releasing aerosol during 2 to 10 seconds,
then remove RE6 from the detector. After a few seconds the detector will trigger alarm.
3b. With optical scattering-type smoke detectors, hold RE6 tight against the detector without
releasing aerosol during up to 12 seconds or until the detector triggers alarm. Then
remove RE6 from the detector. With smoke detectors with long delays, RE6 has to be
held tight against the detector for up to one minute until alarm is triggered. Releasing
some aerosol during this time after every 20 seconds may help to produce an alarm.
4.
If no alarm occurs, repeat steps 2 and 3. If the detector still fails to respond it may be
defective.
Disclaimer
This product has been designed for use solely with a dispenser RE6. Use only in accordance
with these instructions and the instructions on the can. No liability can be accepted for
