1. Before using a lanyard with shock absorber, it is essential
that users read this manual and comply with its instructions,
in order to ensure the safe use and efficiency of the device.
This manual must be kept and made available to all users.
Additional copies can be supplied on request.
2. Before use, it is essential that users are trained in the use of
this safety device. Check the condition of the components
that are attached (harness, connectors) and ensure that
there is sufficient clearance. The lifetime of this device is

3. The lanyard can only be used by a single person who is trai-
ned and competent, or who is under the responsibility of
such a person.
4. If a lanyard which is not in a good apparent state, or which
has been used to prevent a fall, all parts of the equipment
must be verified by Tractel® S.A.S., or by a competent per-
son who must provide written authorisation for the reuse of
the system. It is recommended to make a visual inspection
prior to each use.
5. Any modification or attachment made to the equipment can-
not be done without prior written approval from Tractel®
S.A.S. The equipment must be transported and stored in its
original packaging.
6. Any lanyard that has not been inspected over the past 12
months should not be used; it must be destroyed or checked
by a competent person who shall provide written authorisa-
tion for its reuse. If it has prevented a fall, it must be des-
troyed.
7. This device is suitable for use on an open air site and for a
temperature range of - 35°C to +60°C. Avoid any contact with
sharp edges, rough surfaces and chemical substances.
8. IMPORTANT: If you are responsible for assigning the
equipment to an employee or similar person, ensure that you
comply with the applicable health and safety at work
regulations.
9. The user must be in good physical and psychological health
when using the equipment. If in doubt, consult a doctor or an
occupational physician. This equipment must not be used by
pregnant women.
10. The equipment should not be used beyond its limits or in any
other situation than that provided for (cf. "Functions and
Description").
11. It is recommended that each user has his own personal
lanyard, especially if he/she is permanently employed.
12. Before using a NF EN 363 fall arrester device, the user must
ensure that each of the components is in good working order:
security system, locking system. During installation, no
damage should be made to any of the security functions.
13. For the safety of the user, it is essential that the device or the
anchoring point is positioned correctly and that the work is
conducted in a manner so as to reduce to a minimum any risk
of fall and any danger linked to the height.
14. An anti-fall harness is the only body-gripping device that is
permitted for use in a fall arrester system.
15. In a fall arrester system, it is essential to verify, prior to each
use, the free space under the user on the workplace, to avoid
any risk of collision, in the case of a fall, with the ground or
with any obstacle found in its path.

Clearance (fig. 2)
"Lg" is the length of the lanyard and "T" is the clearance measu-
red beneath the feet of the user.
a. The anchorage point is fixed to the ceiling/wall, at a height of
1.5 m or more above the feet of the user (fig. 2.a):
For Lg = 1.5 m, clearance > 4 m.
For Lg = 2 m, clearance > 4.5 m.

b. The anchorage point is fixed to the ground (Fig. 2.b) :
For Lg = 1.5 m, clearance > 6 m.
For Lg = 2 m, clearance > 6.7 m.
16. To ensure user safety, if the product is re-sold in a country
other than the initial country of destination, the second-hand
dealer must provide: An instructions manual and a mainte-
nance manual for periodic inspection and repair purposes,
written in the language of the country in which the equipment
is to be used.

Operation
Inspection before use
Check:
• Visual inspection of the state of the lanyard, the seams and/or
the splices. The cord, the belt and the stitches should not show
any signs of wear and tear, burns or cuts. The adjusting parts
should not show any signs of corrosion and should function cor-
rectly. In case of doubt, immediately withdraw the equipment
from use.
• Check that the energy absorber has not already been used: the
tearing-rupture belt must be situated inside the protective
sheath. If the lanyard has been used to prevent a fall, the ener-
gy absorber will be stretched and a part of its belt shall be found
outside the sheath. It is forbidden and dangerous to put the belt
back inside the sheath as the system will not function properly.
• Check the state of the harness and connector attachments.
• Check the complete fall arrester system.
Functions and description
The full length of the lanyard, equipped with an energy absorber,
two machined ends and two connectors, must not exceed 2 m.
The lanyard with shock absorber, which is a PA66, performs the
function of stopping the person who is falling. One end of the
lanyard is attached to one of the attachment points on the har-
ness while the other is attached to fixed or mobile anchorage
point, resistance ≥ 10 kN (EN 795).
There are single and fork lanyards, and certain models have an
integral adjustment device. The lanyard may be made of stran-
ded rope, webbing or braided rope. It is equipped with a shock
absorber which limits the braking force when a fall is stopped.

For applications where a longer lifetime is required, braided
rope lanyards are more suitable.

Use a single lanyard when the user attaches it to a fixed or
mobile anchorage point.

Use a fork lanyard when the user moves it from one anchora-
ge to another on a structure.

When a user wishes to shorten the lanyard and thus minimi-
se the height of fall, a lanyard with an adjuster should be
used.
When a fall is stopped, the energy is dissipated by tearing of the
textile weft, so that the braking force applied to the person is limi-
ted to less than 600 daN. Following a fall, the length of the shock
absorber increases from 260 mm before the fall to between 350
and 1500 mm (the elongation is proportional to the height of the
fall).
CAUTION
Before and during use, it is necessary to plan out how pos-
sible rescue can be efficiently and safely conducted, within
less than 15 minutes. Beyond such time, the person's life is
in danger.
