9.13 Use of polarized light
1. Remove the specimen from the stage.
2. Put a mirror on the stage and get into approxima-
te focus on the mirror surface.
3. Insert polarizer and analyzer into the light path.
4. Rotate the knurled ring of the analyzer ① and,
looking into the eyepiece, reach the darkest posi-
tion available. (Fig. 35)
5. Once the dark is achieved ("extinction" or "Cros-
sed Nicol" position) it is possible to begin the
observation.
6. Remove the mirror from the stage, put a speci-
men and focus.
