Ideal ambient air has a humidity level between 40% and 60%. This level is often not reached, particularly
in winter, when cold, dry air enters living spaces and is then repeatedly warmed up. This dry air absorbs
ambient moisture, drying out mucous membranes, skin, and even furniture.
Dry ambient air may have a number of negative effects:
• Mucous membranes and lips dry out
• Eyes become irritated
• Infections and respiratory diseases are more likely
• Exhaustion, tiredness and difficulty concentrating
• Pets and plants experience unnecessary strain
• Dust forms more quickly
• Electrostatic buildup in synthetic textiles such as carpets and floor coverings
• Wooden furniture and parquet floors can warp
• Musical instruments go out of tune
