Information zum Vorbild
Die besonderen Erfordernisse der Steilrampen der
Gotthardstrecke führten zu Beginn der 30er Jahre
zu eingehenden Untersuchungen über einen
neuen Loktyp. Die notwendigen Zugleistungen
waren so gewaltig, dass nur eine Doppel-Loko-
motive diese Anforderungen erfüllen konnte. Im
Jahr 1931 wurde die neue Serie Ae 8/14 in Dienst
gestellt. Durch das Dienstgewicht von 240 Tonnen
und die 8 Fahrmotoren erreichte diese monumen-
tale Maschine eine Anfahrzugkraft von 50 Tonnen.
Die Stundenleistung von 7.500 PS wurde durch
den von der Ae 4/7 bewährten Buchli-Antrieb
übertragen. Dies ermöglichte gute Fahreigenschaf-
ten auch auf kleinen Kurvenradien und abzweigen-
den Weichen.
Heute ist die Lokomotive 11801 im Depot Erstfeld
als betriebsfähige Museumsmaschine stationiert.

Information about the Prototype
At the beginning of the 1930s the special require-
ments on the grades for the Gotthard route led to
comprehensive tests of a new type of locomotive.
The necessary tractive effort was so immense
that only a double locomotive could satisfy these
requirements. The new class Ae 8/14 was placed
into service in 1931. With a service weight of
240 metric tons (approx. 266 tons) and 8 traction
motors, this giant unit achieved a tractive effort
of 50 tons. The hourly output of 7,500 hp was
transmitted to the wheels with the proven Buchli
drive borrowed from the Ae 4/7. This provided
good running characteristics on sharp curves and
turnout branches.
Today locomotive 11 801 is stationed at the Erst-
feld Depot as an operational museum locomotive.
