2.0 INTRODUCTION

The OPTIKA zoom stereo microscopes SZM series are high performance Greenough microscopes
with continuous zoom system 0.7:4.5.
These instruments are made for examining any three dimensional object in industrial, biological and
educational applications. They are equipped with two separate optical systems that give an excellent
fi eld depth to the image, a stereoscopic effect.
There are, at the moment, 4 models in the series:
SZM-1:
Binocular head. Simple stand for incident light with focusing controlled by a pair of
knobs. Base size: 29x23 cm; stand height: 22 cm. This model is complete with incident
and transmitted light.
SZM-2:
Trinocular version of model SZM-1.
Suitable for photo/video applications.
SZM-3:
Binocular head with focusing controlled by a pair of knobs. Base diameter: 25 cm;
stand height: 48 cm. This model is fi tted with an overhanging stand that allows very
large objects to be viewed and to be handled and worked.
SZM-4:
Trinocular version of model SZM-3.
Suitable for photo/video applications.

3.0 UNPACKING AND ASSEMBLY

The components for the SZM series are shipped in a Styrofoam box for protection. Open the box
with care to avoid that any components fall out and get damaged.
If the instrument has been damaged during the transport, please contact both the carrier and your
supplier immediately.
Unpack the stand and put it on a good stable table. Loosen the lock screw of the focusing carrier,
adjust the height of the focusing carrier and lock the lock screw again. For the SZM-3/4, make sure
that the support collar is secured fi rmly below the focusing carrier along the vertical post. This is
important as this collar functions to avoid the accidental falling of the microscope head along the
stand.
Put the stereo head onto the focusing carrier and lock it by the lock screw on the side of the focu-
sing carrier. During the operation of the microscope, this screw should always be locked to maintain
maximum stability.
Unpack the eyepieces and other optical parts carefully and place the eyepieces into the eyepiece
tubes. When handling the optical parts, avoid touching any lens surface with naked hand or fi ngers.
Any fi ngerprints or grease stains will negatively affect the image quality.
