Guardian LP or Natural Gas Heater
Igniter (HSI - AW Models)
1. See Fig. 13 for location.
2. Generally, igniter replacement consists of removing
its mounting screw and cutting the shrink tubing to
expose the male igniter connector and female wire
harness connector. (Specific change-out instructions
accompany the replacement igniter).
Testing
■ Perform an ohm check at the ignition control terminals
HSI and HSIG when the igniter is cold.
■ This verifies circuit integrity of the igniter and its associ-
ated wiring and connections.
■ Ohm readings will vary somewhat, but generally will be
in the range of 50-55 ohms.
Flame Sensor (HSI - AW
Models)
1. Remove the sensor from its mounting bracket. See
Fig.13. Clean the sensor rod with steel wool or emery
cloth. Rub briskly to remove build up of dust, dirt and
oxide.

2. Check the flame sensor's insulator base for cracks. If
cracks are found, replace the sensor.
3. Position the flame sensor as shown in Fig. 14.

Assembly (Spark - AD
Models)
Refer to Fig.15 (AD100 and AD250) or Fig.16
(AD060) for servicing of the igniter assembly.
• The igniter /sensor assembly may require clean-
ing due to accumulations of dust and dirt over a
period of time, affecting its ability to ignite fuel gas
and sense burner flame. Cleaning will require
igniter/sensor removal.
-- If spark appears to be weak, rub the igniter elec-
trode with emery cloth or steel wool to remove
any buildup.
-- If the spark appears strong but the heater cycles
off, rub the sensor rod with emery cloth or steel
wool to remove any build-up.
• Ensure the igniter gap is 1/8 – 3/16 in. and the
igniter tip is positioned over the burner port ac-
cording to the illustration below.
• Prior to start up when the heater has not been
used for an extended period of time:
-- Ensure the top of the burner casting is free of
corrosion. Corrosion prevents the igniter sparking
to the top of the burner.
-- Remove any corrosion with emery cloth or a wire
brush.
