Introduction
S4 PIONEER X-ray Spectrometer
Components of the Safety Lines:
The various components of the safety lines work as follows:
K6/K7:
When turning on key switch S600 (right position) the two relays K6 and K7 will close and stay activated.
The two safety lines are enabled now. If any of the safety lines is interrupted both relays will be switched
off immediately.
K52/K53:
The switching contacts of the two contactors K52 and K53 turn on the high voltage generation unit
located inside the X-ray generator. As soon as this unit is activated, the connected X-ray tube will be
supplied with the given electrical power. The values for high voltage and tube current will be set indi-
vidually by firmware.
If the two safety lines are closed the contactors K52 and K53 can be turned on and off by firmware
control. If any of the two safety lines is interrupted, both contactors will be switched off immediately
and stop the generation of X-rays.
The switching contacts called K52-1/K52-2 and K53-1/K53-2 have a special function. As long as the
high voltage generation unit is disabled these contacts will shorten the switches S659, S660, S661
and S662 which control the sample entry position. That way samples can be inserted into or removed
from the measuring position without interrupting the safety lines. If the high voltage generation unit
gets enabled K52-1/K52-2 and K53-1/K53-2 will open and thus activate S656, S660, S661 and S662.
S651-S658:
Switches S651 through S658 check if the four side panels of the S4 spectrometer are mounted cor-
rectly. If any of these switches is interrupted because panels are not attached the generation of high
voltage will be stopped immediately.
S659/S660:
Switches S659 and S660 control the position of the sample seal. They are located at the front edge of
the sample seal. They guarantee that the generation of high voltage can only be enabled if the sample
seal has been closed correctly.
These two switches are permanently controlled by a special hardware unit located on the printed cir-
cuit board 'MIDI Universal IO-Board' (C79298-A3220-B221). This unit is completely implemented by
hardware and compares the states of S659 and S660. If the state of S659 and S660 differs, the con-
