Do not allow system or system components to freeze; do not expose filter assembly to
direct sunlight (ultra violet light).
Step 1. After selecting the location where you will install your filter in the water line,
determine if existing shut off valves will isolate the filter housing during car-
tridge changes. It is important to have valves on both sides of the filter hous-
ing. If you are installing the filter housing near the main water shut-off valve,
you may need to add only one additional valve just past the filter to prevent
back flow of water from the plumbing system during cartridge changing.
Thread two short 1-inch nipples into the filter head, one on each side, then
add ball valves as necessary. If ball valves have been added, thread an addi-
tional short nipple into valve for connection to compression union (Figure 3A).
Use Teflon tape on all joints. Do not use joint compound. Tighten securely
with a wrench but do not overtighten.
Step 2. Turn off the water supply and drain the water lines by opening a faucet in an
upstairs sink in the house and one in the basement of the house. Measure and
cut the water line based on your individual installation (Figure 2).
Step 3. Slide the filter into position in the water line taking careful note of the proper
water flow direction (Figure 3). Use compression unions to connect the filter to
your water line. The filter assembly should be supported with pipe hangers to
prevent stress and leakage at the compression unions. Turn on the water sup-
ply and test for leaks. (Figure 3A is an alternate installation showing the use of
ball valves).
When to change the filter cartridge
Model FPWF-WH3
When the water flow is noticeably reduced it is time to change the cartridge.
Generally you should change the cartridge every three months, however, water con-
ditions vary greatly and you may need to change your cartridge more frequently.
Model FPWF-WH4
When noticeable rust stains return it is time to change the filter cartridge. Generally
you should change the cartridge every six months, however, water conditions vary
greatly and you may need to change your cartridge more frequently.
Step 1. Close the gate valves on both sides of the filter and press the pressure release
button.
Step 2. Unscrew the filter canisters and remove the cartridge. Inspect the
O-Ring and lubricate with Vaseline if necessary. For proper sealing the O-Ring
should be replaced every three cartridge changes.
Step 3. Replace the filter cartridge and reinstall the filter canister. Open the gate
valves on both sides of the filter and press the pressure release button to
remove trapped air.
