ADJUSTING THE SAW CHAIN TENSION
1. Disconnect the power cord from the power
source before adjusting the chain tension.
Wear gloves.
2. Loosen the bar-clamping knob and the
bar-tip-guard screw (Fig. 12b).
3. Turn the chain-tensioning knob clockwise
until all slack from the chain is removed
and the chain seats snugly against the
guide bar with the drive links in the guide-
bar groove.
4. The chain is correctly tensioned when the
drive links are just able to be pulled from
the guide bar groove when pulled from the
center of the guide bar.
5. Retighten the bar-clamping knob and the
bar nose-cap screw (Fig. 12b).
6. See the section: "REPLACING THE
GUIDE BAR AND SAW CHAIN" in this
manual for additional information.

source before performing any maintenance;
failure to heed this warning could result in
serious personal injury.
WARNING
these components are sharp and may contain
burrs.
A properly sharpened saw chain cuts through
wood effortlessly and produces chips, even
with very little pressure. A dull chain will be
harder to push and will produce dust. Never
use a dull or damaged saw chain.
NOTICE: Watch for nails or metal.
NOTICE: Never use a worn-out chain on a
new sprocket.
A dull chain pulverizes the wood and produces
saw dust. A sharp saw chain will produce
chips.

Always wear gloves when
handling the saw chain;
required. A chain tensioned while it is warm
may be too tight upon cooling. Check the cold
tension before next use.
NOTICE: In the event that the saw-chain-
tensioning knob is broken or jammed, there
is a slotted chain-tensioning screw for
adjustment of the saw-chain tension with a
manual, slotted screwdriver(Fig. 14).

A dull saw chain cutter leads to increased
physical strain, increased vibration load,
unsatisfactory cutting results and increased
wear.
For smooth and fast cutting, the chain needs
to be maintained properly. The chain requires
sharpening when the wood chips are small
and powdery, the chain must be forced
through the wood during cutting, or the chain
cuts to one side.
NOTICE: If cutter teeth have hit hard objects,
such as nails and stones, or have been
abraded by mud or sand on the wood, have
the chain sharpened by a qualified service
technician.
NOTICE: Inspect the drive sprocket for wear
or damage when replacing the chain. If signs
of wear or damage are present in the areas
indicated, have the drive sprocket replaced by
qualified service technician.
