Introduction

The InSpectra
StO
Tissue Oxygenation Monitor uses near infrared spectroscopy to measure local oxygen
2
saturation of hemoglobin in tissue (StO
The absorption spectrum of light remitted from a tissue sample varies mainly with oxyhemoglobin and
deoxyhemoglobin concentration. The percent of StO
contained in the volume of tissue illuminated by the near infrared light.
Tissue Hemoglobin Index (THI), as measured in a range of 1–99 by the InSpectra StO
Monitor, is a quantified value that corresponds to the amount of hemoglobin present within the volume of tissue
illuminated by the patient contact sensor optical signal. The InSpectra StO
tissue absorbance values at different wavelengths. A reference measurement and scaling of the second derivative
absorbance spectrum provides a means of internal calibration. The InSpectra StO
therefore does not require calibration before each use.

Components

The InSpectra
StO
Tissue Oxygenation Monitor has two (2) main components and a power cord:

1. The Monitor and Optical Cable. The monitor contains an LCD screen
microcontroller, cooling fan, optical cable, back-up battery, and internal software. Light emitting diodes in the
monitor are the light source. The monitor has an internal lithium ion battery and two external data ports. It is
equipped with an adjustable C-clamp for attachment to an IV pole. The optical cable
connected to the monitor, contains one set of optical fibers to transmit light to the tissue, and a second set of
optical fibers that receive light from the tissue and return it to a photosensitive detector in the monitor.
2. The InSpectra
StO
Sensor

The single-use InSpectra StO
Sensor, when connected to the
optical cable, conducts the optical
signal to the patient and back to the
monitor. The sensor has a shield
to protect the measurement from
ambient light interference, has an
metal reinforced cable to protect the
optical fibers, and has an adhesive
surface to facilitate attachment of the
sensor to the patient for continuous
monitoring.
