Safety advice
• Observe the professional safety
!
and accident prevention regu-
lations applicable to your country.
• Switch off the voltage to all the
devices/machines and plant
involved in the installation.
• Avoid blows and shocks to the
shaft, these may lead to defects
in the ball-bearing.
• Use a suitable flexible shaft coup-
ling. The suitability of the coupling
depends on the angular offset and
shaft offset occurring, on the
acceleration, the temperature, the
rotational speed and the per-
missible bearing load for the
encoder, which is specified in the
encoder data sheet.
• Never make electrical
connections to or detach
them from the encoder with the
voltage switched on, otherwise
this may lead to defects in the
instrument.
• For the satisfactory functioning
of the instruments, care must be
taken to achieve good earthing or
a screen connection which is
EMC-compatible.

Incremental encoders

Necessary tools/parts
M4 screws are needed for fastening via the
threaded holes on the flange side.
The length and the design of the screw head
depend on the installation conditions. Servo
clamps and M4 screws are needed for
fastening via the servo groove;
Select the screw length appropriate for the
installation conditions.
For encoders with expanding shaft, the
setting tool EW1 is needed or, as an
alternative, an 8 mm tubular box spanner
and a 4 mm hexagon key.
Zero-point presetting
- 6 mm Ø solid shaft; rotate the shaft so
that the notch (6) points towards the
marking (5) on the flange (Figure 1c)
- 10 mm Ø solid shaft; rotate the shaft, so
that the flat (6) on the shaft points
towards the marking (5) on the flange
(Figure 2b).
- 10 mm Ø expanding shaft; presetting is
not necessary, since it is possible to set
the zero-point in the installed state.
General advice
The more accurately the centring for the
encoder is, the lower are the angular offset
and shaft offset after the installation and the
smaller is the stress applied to the coupling
and the bearings of the encoder.
In order not to stress the coupling during the
installation, always fix the encoder by its flan-
ge first and then fasten the coupling onto the
driveshaft.
In the case of encoders with the plug outlet
on the housing, the plug housing should be
electrically conductively connected to the
housing, whereas in the case of instruments
with a cable outlet, the screening braid is
connected to the housing.
From the point of view of EMC, it is absolutely
necessary for the housing or the cable
screen to be connected to earth or ground.
This can be done via the housing of the
mating connector or by connecting the
screening braid of the cable. The screening
braid should be connected over a large area.
