Die Baureihe (BR) 120 der Deutschen Bundesbahn (DB) ist
ein Wendepunkt in der Lokomotiv-Entwicklung. Die moderne
Halbleitertechnik ermöglicht es, Drehstrom-Motoren als An-
triebsmaschinen einzusetzen. Neben geringeren Wartungs-
kosten durch die unkomplizierte Bauart ermöglichen sie hohe
Dauerzugkraft über nahezu den gesamten Geschwindigkeits-
bereich. Dadurch ist die Lokomotive universell für Reise- und
Güterzugdienst einsetzbar.
Die Dauerleistung beträgt 5.600 kW, ihre Höchstgeschwindig-
keit 160 km/h. Am 17.10.1984 stellte die BR 120001-3 mit einer
Geschwindigkeit von 265 km/h einen absoluten Schienenwelt-
rekord für Drehstrom-Lokomotiven auf. Es wurden fünf Vorse-
rien-Loks als BR 120.0 gebaut. Die Serienausführung wird als
BR 120.1 bezeichnet.

The class (BR) 120 of the German Federal Railroad (DB) is a
turning point in the development of locomotives. Modern semi-
conductor technology has enabled the use of three-phase mo-
tors as traction motors. In addition to lower maintenance costs
due to their uncomplicated design, these motors enable a high
continuous tractive effort over almost the entire speed range.
For this reason the locomotive can be used for both passenger
and freight service.
The continuous output is 5600 kilowatts and its maximum speed
is 160 km/h (100 m.p.h.). On October 17, 1984 the no. BR 120001-3
set an absolute world record for three-phase locomotives with
a speed of 265 km/h (165.63 m.p.h.). Five preproduction locomo-
tives were built as the class 120.0. The mass produced version
is classified as the 120.1.
