d) the chain saw must be secured to the harness
before it is released from the rope.
The chain saw must always be shut off when it is
attached directly to the harness.
The chain saw is allowed to be attached only
to recommended suspension fi xtures on the
harness.
The possibility of securing the chain saw directly
to the harness reduces the risk of the machine
being damaged if there is movement in the tree.
The chain saw must always be switched off when
it is attached directly to the harness.
If the chain saw is moved from any suspension
fi xture to another suspension fi xture, the user
must ensure that the saw is secured in the new
position before it is released from the previous
suspension fi xture.
In order for the chain saw to be held in both
hands, the user must assume a secure working
position with the saw held at hip height when
sawing horizontal pieces and at stomach height
when sawing vertical pieces.
Using the chain saw in the tree
An analysis of accidents with these chain saws
in tree care operations shows that the primary
cause lies in the chain saw being used inexpertly
in one hand. In the majority of accidents the users
were not in a safe working position allowing them
to hold the chain saw by both handles. This can
lead to an increased risk of injury for the following
reasons:
lack of grip when the chain saw kicks back,
lack of control over the chain saw, making
it more likely that it comes into contact
with climbing ropes and the user's body
(particularly the left hand and the arm), and
loss of control due to an unsafe working
position, causing contact with the chain saw
(unexpected movements while working with
the chain saw).
Safe working position with two-handed use
To enable the chain saw to be held in both hands,
the user should always try to adopt a safe working
position in which the saw is held in the following
way:
at hip height, when sawing horizontal pieces,
and
at stomach height, when sawing vertical

pieces.
If the user is working close to the trunk which runs
vertically up the tree and the lateral force relative
to the working position is low, secure footing is
suffi cient for a safe working position. If the footing
in the current position is not suffi cient, a stirrup
formed from an endless sling must be used for
added support (Fig 23).
However, as soon as the user moves away from
the trunk, additional measures must be taken to
reduce the increasing lateral forces or counteract
them. This must be done by routing the main
rope around an additional suspension fi xture or
by using an adjustable sling running from the
harness to an additional suspension fi xture (Fig.
24).
The chain brake must always be engaged before
the chain saw is lowered on its suspension
rope. Before starting diffi cult sawing work, the
user must ensure that the chain saw battery is
suffi ciently charged.
When doing tree care work, the user must
never hold the saw in one hand while working in
unstable positions or use the chain saw to cut off
the tips of branches with small diameters instead
of using a handsaw.
Chain saws are allowed to be held in one hand for
tree care work only if:
a) it is not possible for the users to assume a
working position which allows them to hold
the saw with two hands,
b) one hand is needed to secure the working
position, and
c) the chain saw is used in a fully outstretched
position at a right angle to and is not in line
with the user's body.
Users must never saw with the kickback area at
the tip of the chain saw bar, hold on to the branch
which they are cutting off or attempt to catch
falling material.
If the chain saw jams during cutting, the user
must:
a) shut off the chain saw and attach it securely
towards the tree interior (e.g. towards the
trunk) or secure it to a separate equipment
rope,
b) remove the chain saw from the notch while
raising the branch up as much as necessary,
c) if needed, use a handsaw or second chain
