NOTICE FOR USING A TOW BAR
A tow bar offers much more safety than a tow rope.
As the distance between the two vehicles is fixed by a rigid connection, this is more likely to prevent a
rear-end collision.
Section 15a of the German StVO regulates the rules for correct towing.
Towing on the motorway is only permitted for a short time: if your vehicle breaks down here, it may
only be towed until the next exit.
If you do not observe this regulation, you will receive a fine.
In addition, the Highway Code states that both cars must switch on the hazard warning lights.
When towing, always unlock the steering lock or leave the ignition on and never remove the key.
When towing a vehicle, you are not allowed to drive onto a motorway.
Since towing is only permitted in an emergency, the broken-down vehicle should only be towed to the
nearest workshop.
Towing vehicles with defective brake systems is not permitted.
The visibility between the two vehicles must be such that the rear and brake lights of the towing
vehicle can be observed from the vehicle being towed.
The starting and braking procedures must be carried out with the necessary caution, as the pull bar
and the towing eyes are not capable of safely absorbing forces that occur during braking.
Affected persons should refer to the operating manual of their vehicle to find out where the towing
equipment should be attached.
Frequently there is only a thread on the car behind a protective cap into which a mobile eyelet is
screwed.
As a result, this must be carried in the vehicle where it can easily be found.
If you are towing a vehicle with automatic transmission, also DSG, the gear must be in N in order to
avoid overheating during towing.
In general, however, a car with automatic transmission that is to be towed should enable the
connection between the transmission and the drive axle to be disconnected.
In case of doubt, it is important to follow the respective instructions of the manufacturer.
Towing an electric car safely only functions to a limited extent, as energy is always generated in the
electric motor via at least one axle.
If the energy flows without an activated on-board system, the control electronics may be damaged.
