Do not enter a hazardous or unknown atmosphere without asking your safety professional
what type of protection is required. Use all the protective equipment and wear it properly.
At the first sign of trouble exit the hazardous area, seek help and report the problem to the
proper authority.
B. What is a half mask respirator?
The Sundström half mask respirator fits over your nose, mouth and under your chin; is held against
the face by an elastic harness; uses protective elements to remove contaminants before they enter the
respirator; and has valves that open to permit exhaled air to exit the respirator then close to prevent
contaminants from entering.
C. What type of protection will a half mask respirator provide?
A properly fitted half mask respirator can protect you against specific levels of some:
Particulates
Gases and Vapors
Viruses and Bacteria
Mold and Fiber
BUT half mask respirators SHOULD NOT be used:
In oxygen deficient areas
In atmospheres that can cause eye damage
In atmospheres Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH)
When the contaminants are unknown.
D. How do I know which filter or cartridge to use?
Your safety professional is responsible for providing you information concerning what filter, cartridge or
combination will provide adequate protection for the hazards at your worksite. You can identify various
10 protective elements by the color of the NIOSH label.
