For meta! tapes:
Since metal tape formulations can handle a higher input level
than other tapes, the master input level contro! knob
Bt}
should
be set to the point where the +3dB point on the peak level meter
lights up occasionally.
{n general, the input level should be the same for both the left
and right channels. However,
if the tevel of the left and right
channels is significantly different, adjust the preset level control
knobs
so that the levels are equal to each other. The input
level differs according to the program source; check the peak
level meter from time to time while recording is in progress to be
sure the input fevel is still correct.
When
recording FM broadcasts:
If you set the recording level using
a 50% modulated
reference
signal, adjust the master input level control knob
Bil] so the OdB
indicators light up. For metal tape formulations, adjust so the
+3dB indicators tight up.
When using a noise reduction system
:
The recording level should be set slightly lower than normal
when using a noise reduction system. When
using Dolby B NR,
the —3dB
level indicators should light up occasionally and when
using Dalby C or dbx, the recording level should be lowered so
that the highest signal levels only cause the —5dB
level indicators
to lightup.
Special Modes of Operation
Real Time Tape Counter
The rea! time tape counter (4) can be used in two ways:
1. Etapsed Time Indication (CONS)
When power is turned on, the counter reads [0:00], the 'CONS'
counter mode indicator
[5] lights and the tape size indicator
(2a)
displays the number '60'. After inserting a cassette, press the
tape size selector button
{25} to set the tape size indicator to the
correct setting. Each time the selector button is pressed, the tape
size indicator advances from 60 to 90, 120, 46L, 46 and then
returns to 60. Once transport has begun in the record or
playback mode, the counter will begin counting the elapsed
(consumed)
time. The two digits on the left side are the minutes
and the two digits on the right are the seconds. To return the
counter to [0:00], press the counter reset button [2] .
Remaining Time Indication (REMA)
The
real time counter can also be used to show the amount of
time remaining on a cassette as it is being recorded or played
back,
:
1) Set the proper cassette size using the tape size selector button
2) Press the counter mode selector button
to switch the
real time counter to the remaining time mode ('REMA'
counter mode indicator [5] lights). The counter will now read
{(----].
Next, start playback or recording. The real time counter will
first read [CALC]
for a few seconds and then show the
remaining time on the cassette.
If you set the wrong tape size, press the tape size selector
button
[25] again to set the correct size as playback or
recording progresses to obtain the correct remaining time
reading.
To Obtain the Most Accurate Time Indications Possible:
The
real time counter is not a clock so there is a slight difference
between the tape transport time as shown by the counter and
the actual time that has elapsed over that period. Smal! differen-
ces in tape lengths between different manufacturers also cause
slighterrors. To obtain a more precise reading of remaining time
near the end of a cassette, repeat the remaining time calcula-
tions. When a cassette of a different fength is inserted, press the
tape size selector button
25) for the new length.
3)
4)
Notes:
!f thewrong tape size is set, the remaining time reading will
differ significantly from the actual remaining time on the
cassette.
F
The correct consumed time is maintained even while the unit is
in the remaining time mode.
The counter reset button
is used to reset the consumed time
reading.
The 46L tape size setting is for C-46 cassettes having farge hubs.
When using a tape size other than one of those included in the
tape size indicator settings, set the tape size that is closest to the
cassette being used. In this case, however, there will be a
difference between the actual consumed
and remaining times
and the displayed times.
Note that slight differences in actual tape length exist between
tapes of the same length made by different manufacturers.

at the point where repeat play is to end. The tape willnow
be played five times between the [0:00]

point where the block repeat button was pressed. After the fifth
time, tape playback will continue to the end of the cassette,
The block repeat mode
is cancelled when the reset button
or one of the AMCS buttons
is pressed or if the end of the
tape is reached. Block repeat is not cancelled by any other
operations.
If the counter is set to [0:00]
just before beginning a recording
and the block repeat button is pressed at the point where the
recording ends, the block repeat mode wil! be set between those
two points. To activate block repeat in this case, press the§Stop

recording has ended.
Using the AMCS
buttons
The AMCS function is useful for quickly checking the contens of a
cassette tape. When either the<or
