1 Overview

1.1 Front panel

1 Volume control for the chime
2 Sliding switch for switching the chime to the
output 1, 1 + 2 or 2
3 Button for activating the chime
4 Volume control, for each input 1 to 10
5 Sliding switch, for each input 1 to 10, for
switching the input to the output 1, 1 + 2 or 2
6 Signal indication SIG, for each input 1 to 10,
lights up when the input signal is applied,
independently of the corresponding volume
control (4)
7 Switch PH . PWR, for each microphone input
2 to 10, to switch on the 15 V phantom
power (position ON)
To connect a microphone or another audio
source with unbalanced signal to the cor-
responding jack, switch off the phantom
power (position OFF) so that the audio
source will not be damaged .
To prevent loud switching noise, only actu-
ate the switch when the unit is switched off
or the volume is turned down .
8 Input level switch MIC / LINE for each input
2 to 10
Button disengaged:
for microphones
Button engaged:
for audio units with line output
(MP3 / CD player, tuner, mixer etc .)
For channels 7 to 10, the unit is switched
over between the corresponding XLR MIC
input jack (19) and RCA LINE input jack (18)
at the same time .
9 Priority switch for the inputs 2 and 3; when
the corresponding switch is in the lower posi-
tion (ON) and the input signal is applied, the
signals of channels 4 to 10 are muted for the
outputs to which channel 2 or 3 is switched
10 Level indication, for each output 1 and 2;
in case of overload, the corresponding red
LED lights up
11 Tone controls BASS and TREBLE, for each
output 1 and 2
12 Volume control MASTER, for each output
1 and 2
13 POWER switch with power LED (if a 24 V
emergency supply voltage is applied, the
preamplifier continues to operate even after
switching-off)

1.2 Rear panel

14 Mains cable for connection to a socket
(230 V/ 50 Hz)
15 Screw terminals for an emergency supply
voltage of 24 V (⎓)
16 Outputs 1 and 2 via balanced XLR jacks for
connection to the power amplifiers
17 RCA jacks REC for a recorder
white jack LEFT = mixed signal 1
red jack RIGHT = mixed signal 2

The level is independent of the volume con-
trols (12) of the outputs 1 and 2 .
18 RCA inputs of channels 7 to 10 for audio
units with line output (CD player, tape deck,
tuner etc .)
19 XLR inputs* of channels 7 to 10 for micro-
phones
20 XLR inputs* of channels 2 to 6 for micro-
phones or for audio units with line output
[to be selected with switch MIC / LINE (8)]
21 RJ45 jack for connecting a PA PTT micro-
phone (e . g . PA-4000PTT)
22 Screw terminals for a momentary pushbut-
ton to activate the chime remotely
2 Safety Notes
The unit corresponds to all relevant directives of
the EU and is therefore marked with
WARNING The unit uses dangerous mains
voltage . Leave servicing to skilled
personnel only and do not insert
anything into the air vents . In-
expert handling or modification
of the unit may result in electric
shock .
The unit is suitable for indoor use only . Protect
it against dripping water and splash water,
high air humidity and heat (admissible ambi-
ent temperature range 0 – 40 °C) .
Do not place any vessels filled with liquid, e . g .
drinking glasses, on the unit .
The heat generated in the unit must be carried
off by air circulation . Therefore, do not cover
the air vents of the housing .
Do not set the unit into operation, and dis-
connect it from the power supply if:
1 . there is visible damage to the unit or to the
mains cable,
2 . a defect might have occurred after the unit
was dropped or suffered a similar accident,
3 . malfunctions occur .
In any case, the unit must be repaired by
skilled personnel .
Never pull the mains cable to disconnect the
mains plug from the mains socket, always
seize the plug .
For cleaning only use a dry, soft cloth, never
use chemicals or water .
No guarantee claims for the unit and no liabil-
ity for any resulting personal damage or mate-
rial damage will be accepted if the unit is used
for other purposes than originally intended, if
it is not correctly connected or operated, or if
it is not repaired in an expert way .
Important for UK Customers!
The wires in this mains lead are coloured in
accordance with the following code:
green / yellow = earth
blue = neutral
brown = live
As the colours of the wires in the mains lead
of this appliance may not correspond with the
coloured markings identifying the terminals in
your plug, proceed as follows:
1 . The wire which is coloured green and yel-
low must be connected to the terminal in
the plug which is marked with the letter E
or by the earth symbol , or coloured green
or green and yellow .
2 . The wire which is coloured blue must be
connected to the terminal which is marked
with the letter N or coloured black .
3 . The wire which is coloured brown must be
connected to the terminal which is marked
with the letter L or coloured red .
Warning – This appliance must be earthed.
If the unit is to be put out of operation
definitively, take it to a local recycling
plant for a disposal which is not harm-
ful to the environment .
3 Applications
This mixing preamplifier is specially designed for
application in PA systems . It is connected ahead
of the PA power amplifier and allows connection
of up to 10 microphones (also phantom-pow-
ered microphones) . To the inputs 2 to 6, audio
units with line output can alternatively be con-
nected . To the inputs 7 to 10, audio units with
.
line output can additionally be connected; it is
possible to switch over to these units via input
selector switches . All inputs can separately be
switched to output 1, output 2 or to both out-
puts at the same time .
A selectable priority circuit for the inputs
1 to 3 mutes the signals of the other channel
so that it is easier to understand important
announcements . In addition, a chime tone can
be selected to precede an announcement .
4 Setting-up
The unit is provided for insertion into a rack
(482 mm / 19"), but it can also be used as a tab-
letop unit . Air must always be able to circulate
without obstruction through all vents so that no
heat accumulation occurs inside the unit . For
installation into a rack, 1 rack space is required
(= 44 .45 mm) .
5 Connections
Prior to connecting units or changing any con-
nections, switch off the PA-1414MX and the
entire PA system .
5.1 Inputs
When connecting the microphones and the
audio units to the individual channels, take into
consideration that channels 1 to 3 can take pri-
ority over channels 4 to 10 .
Channel 1: With activated priority circuit [switch
PRIORITY at the microphone in position ON],
the channels 4 to 10 are muted when the talk
button on the microphone is pressed .
Channels 2 and 3: With activated priority circuit
[switch PRI-2, PRI-3 (9)], as long as a signal is
available here, the signals of the channels 4 to
10 are muted for the outputs to which channel
2 or 3 is switched .
5.1.1 Microphones
Connect microphones to the jacks MIC INPUT
(19) and MIC / LINE INPUT (20) . Disengage the cor-
responding button MIC / LINE (8) [position MIC] .
If a microphone requires phantom power,
set the switch PH . PWR (7) to position ON .* Thus,
a phantom power of 15 V is applied to the corre-
sponding jack . To switch off the voltage, set the
switch to position OFF . To prevent loud switching
noise, only actuate the switch when the unit is
switched off or the volume is turned down .
* Caution! With the phantom power switched on
[switch PH . PWR (7)], never connect any microphones
or other audio sources with unbalanced signals to the
jack; they may be damaged .
