8. Special remarks

8.1 Camera models

The multitude of camera models and their pecu-
liarities make it impossible to detail all camera-
specific capabilities, settings, displays, etc. For
more details concerning the operation of a flash
unit please refer to the corresponding chapters in
the operating instructions for the given camera!

8.2 Preflash function for red-eye reduction

Various cameras offer the possibility to activate a
preflash for red-eye reduction. This function only
supports the flash unit integrated in the camera. It
does not support external flash units, such as the
mecablitz.
8.3 Determining the maximum flash range
with the guide number table
Various older manual-focus lenses do not transmit
to the camera or flash unit any information re-
garding the aperture and focal length. The came-
ra aperture and the maximum flash range are not
indicated on the LC display of the mecablitz. In
this instance the flash range can be established
with the help of the table shown in the Annex (see
Chapter 12).
The following formula is applicable:
Maximum flash range =
This does not apply to bounce flash exposure,
e.g. when the reflector is swivelled away!
Example:
Use an ISO 100 film and a focal length of 50mm.
Refer to Table 12.1 to establish the valid guide
number for this combination, which is 34. Set on
the camera lens the aperture f/4, for example.
Finally, calculate the maximum flash range by the
above formula:
Max. flash range =
For the manual flash mode M at full light output
this means that the subject should be located at a
distance of 8.5 m from the camera to ensure cor-
rect exposure.
For the TTL flash mode this means that the maxi-
mum camera-to-subject distance should not
exceed 8.5 m. However, to give the camera's elec-
