4. Using the charger for the first time
• Locate the mains lead attached to the rear
of the charger, and connect it to the 230 V
mains supply. The unit is now ready for use.
• Connect the Lithium-Polymer battery to the
charger by plugging the voltage sensor lead
into the socket on the front panel.
Take care to maintain correct polarity: the
black wire must be aligned with the arrow
marking on the charger front panel.
The charge process now starts automatically.
The monitor LED for the appropriate output
lights up to indicate that charging is in pro-
gress.
At a charge rate of 1C the charge process for a
discharged pack takes about 90 minutes.

The Lithium-Polymer battery is charged using
constant current (CC) until the voltage of each
cell reaches about 4.2 V (point B in the graph).
After this the voltage is held constant (CV), and
the current curve declines steadily for the
remainder of the charge period.
The battery is around 95% fully charged when
all the LEDs go out (point C).
The battery can now be disconnected from the
charger, and used in the model.
You can interrupt the charge process at any
time by disconnecting the voltage sensor lead.
If you leave the battery connected to the char-
ger, more energy is charged into the pack, and
it will eventually be perfectly balanced without
being overcharged.
The unit does not feature a charge cut-off cir-
cuit in the classic sense, as the charge current
simply declines towards "zero" when the bat-
tery pack is fully charged and perfectly balan-
ced.
