INTRODUCTION

The SKF viscometer TMVM 1 is a rotational viscometer with a digital display,
specially suited for fast tests and comparative viscosity measurements on
lubrication oils.
2.1

Measuring principle

A rotor, rotating at constant speed, is immersed into the liquid to be tested.
The rotational resistance of the rotor is a measure of the viscosity of the liquid.
The measured viscosity is shown on the digital display of the viscometer.
2.2

Technology

The drive axis is connected to one side of a spiral
spring and the rotor axis to the other. Under
rotation and with no load applied, the pointers pass
a light barrier at the same time. This is because the
spring is not deflected. When a load is applied, due
to the rotor being immersed in a liquid, then the
spring is twisted and the time offset between the 2
pointers passing the light barrier can be measured.
2.3

Measuring Ranges

The SKF viscometer TMVM 1 has three measuring ranges, each depending on the
rotor used. The R3 rotor is supplied standard with the viscometer. It covers the
viscosity range relating to the greater majority of lubrication oils. The viscosity
values given in mPas are only valid when the measuring cup is used with the rotor.
The viscosity values are based on comparative calibration measurements with
Newtonian liquids.
