Gasoline
Useextremecarewhenhandlinggasoline.Gasolineisextremely
flammableand the vaporsare explosive.Neverfuel the machine
indoorsor whilethe engineis hot or running.Extinguishcigarettes,
cigars,pipes andother sourcesof ignition.
Use automotive gasoline(unleadedor low leadedto minimizecombus-
tionchamberdeposits)with a minimumof 87 octane.Gasolinewith
up to 10%ethanolor 15%MTBE(MethylTertiaryButyl Ether)canbe
used. Neverusean oil/gasolinemixtureor dirty gasoline.Avoidgetting
dirt, dust,or waterin thefuel tank. DO NOTuse E85gasoline.
•
Refuelin a well-ventilated areawith the engine stopped.Donot
smokeor allowflamesor sparksin the area wheretheengine is
refueledor wheregasolineis stored.
•
Do notoverfillthe fuel tank. After refueling, makesurethe tank
cap is closedproperlyand securely.
•
Be carefulnot to spillfuel when refueling.Spilledfuelor fuelvapor
may ignite. If any fuel is spilled, makesurethe area is dry before
startingtheengine.
•
Avoidrepeatedor prolonged contactwith skinor breathing of vapor

to overfill.
STARTING
THE ENGINE
Alwayskeephandsand feetclear of movingparts.Do notuse a
pressurizedstartingfluid. Vaporsare flammable.
If you havea groundedthree-prongreceptacle,proceedas follows.
If you do not havethe properhousewiring, DONOT usethe electric
starterunder anyconditions.
1.
Plugthe extensioncord intothe outlet locatedon the engine's
surface.Plug the otherend of extensioncord intoa three-prong
120-volt,grounded,AC outlet in a well-ventilated area.
2.
Movethrottlecontrolto FAST(rabbit)_
position.
3.
Movechoketo the CHOKEposition I.,.,¢1 (coldengine start).
NOTE: If the engine is alreadywarm, placechokecontrolin the
RUNpositioninsteadof CHOKE I,,_¢ I position.
4.
Pushprimerthreetimes(3x), makingsureto covervent hole in
primerbulb whenpushing.If engine is warm,pushprimeronly
once. Alwayscovervent hole whenpushing.Cool weathermay
requireprimingto be repeated.
5.
Pushstarterbuttonto startengine.Oncetheengine starts,im-
mediatelyreleasestarterbutton.Electricstarteris equippedwith
thermaloverloadprotection;systemwill temporarilyshut-downto
allow starterto cool if electricstarterbecomesoverloaded.
To prolongstarterlife, use short startingcycles (5 secondsmaximum
then waitone minute).
6.
As the enginewarms, slowlyrotatethechoke controlto the RUN
position. If the enginefalters, restartengineand runwith choke
at half-chokepositionfor a shortperiod of time,and thenslowly
rotatethe choke intothe RUNposition.
7.
After engineis running,disconnectpowercord fromelectric
starter.Whendisconnecting, a lwaysunplugthe end at the wall
outlet beforeunpluggingthe oppositeend fromthe engine.
Recoil Starter
NOTE:Allowtheengineto warmup for a few minutesafter starting.
Theenginewill not developfull poweruntil it reachesoperating
temperatures.
1.
Makecertain boththe augercontroland drivecontrolare in the
disengaged(released)position.
2.
Insertkey into slot.Makesureit snapsinto place.Do notattempt
to turnthe key.
NOTE:The enginecannotstart withoutthe key is fully insertedintothe
ignitionswitch.
Electric
Starter
Theoptionalelectricstarteris equippedwith a groundedthree-wire
powercord and plug, and is designedto operateon 120volt AC
householdcurrent.It mustbe usedwith a properlygroundedthree-
prong receptacleat all timesto avoidthe possibilityof electricshock.
Followall instructionscarefullypriorto operatingthe electricstarter.
DO NOTuse electricstarterin the rain.
Determinethat yourhome'swiringis a three-wiregroundedsystem.
Ask a licensedelectricianif youare not certain.
Donot pull the starterhandlewhiletheengine running.
1.
Movethrottlecontrolto FAST(rabbit)_1
position.
2.
Movechoketo the CHOKEI,,,¢1position_(cold e ngine start). If
engine is warm, placechoke in the RUNposition.
3.
Pushprimerthreetimes, makingsureto covervent holewhen
pushing.If engineis warm,pushprimeronly once.Alwayscover
vent hole whenpushing.Coolweathermayrequireprimingto be
repeated.
4.
Pullgentlyon thestarterhandleuntilit beginsto resist,thenpull
quicklyand forcefully to overcome the compression. Engineshould
start. Donot releasethe handleandallowit to snapback.Return
ropeSLOWLY to originalposition. If required, r epeatthis step.
5.
As the enginewarms, slowlyrotatethechoke controlto the RUN
position. If the enginefalters, restartengineand runwith choke
at half-chokepositionfor a shortperiod of time,and thenslowly
rotatethe choke intothe RUNposition.
Toavoidunsupervisedengineoperation,neverleavethe machine
unattendedwith the enginerunning.Turnthe engineoff after useand
removekey.
