PROBLEM
Bead too thick in places

POSSIBLE CAUSE
Holding the electrode too long in
one place or moving it too slowly
across the base metal
Moving the electrode too rapidly or
holding too short an arc
Arc too long or rate of travel too
fast
Electrode is held in contact with
base metal while arc is struck
1. Damp electrodes
2. Wrong type of electrode

POSSIBLE SOLUTION
Speed up; maintain a uniform rate
of speed along the bead
Slow down; lengthen the arc
slightly
Slow down
Move electrode away from the base
metal immediately after the arc is
struck
1. Store electrodes in a dry location
2. Use correct electrode
