d. Visually inspect the spark plug. Replace the spark plug if there is apparent wear or if the insulator is broken or chipped. If the
spark plug can be reused, clean it with a wire brush.
e. Measure the spark plug gap with a feeler gauge. Adjust if necessary by bending the side electrode. The clearance should be:
0.6–0.7 mm
f. Check that the sealing washer is in good condition and install the spark plug by hand to prevent it from being cross-threaded.
g. After the spark plug is installed by hand, tighten with the 16 × 17 mm spark plug wrench to compress the washer.
RECOMMENDATION: When installing a new spark plug, tighten half of a turn after inserting the spark plug by hand to compress the
washer. When reinstalling a used spark plug, tighten 1/8-1/4 of a turn after inserting the spark plug by hand to compress the washer.
h. Fasten the spark plug cover.
i. Install the engine upper cover and tighten the 4-mm hex bolt firmly.
CAUTION!
If the engine has been operated recently, the muffler will be very hot. Be very careful not to touch the muffler.
CAUTION!
The spark plug must be tightened securely. An improperly tightened spark plug can get very hot and damage
the engine.
