General instructions for pH-electrodes InPro
1. Introduction
The METTLER TOLEDO InPro
ed double chamber system using a gel electrolyte and a reference system together with a silver ions barrier. Please read through these operating instruc-
tions carefully before commissioning, in order to ensure trouble-free use. We recommend that you only operate the electrode in combination with original
parts from METTLER TOLEDO. Operation and maintenance should be carried out only by trained personnel and staff who have read and understood the
operating instructions.
2. Safety instructions
When cleaning or calibrating the electrode using solutions containing acids or alkalis both protective spectacles and protective gloves should be worn.
Do not touch the electrode at the plug-in contacts, since electrostatic discharges can damage the electronics.
3. Product description
The inscription on each electrode contains the following information:

Observe the operating instructions
In addition each electrode is allocated a serial number on the red part of the plug-in head to enable identification.
4. Installation and commissioning
1. While unpacking check the electrode for mechanical damage. Please report any damage immediately to your METTLER TOLEDO supplier.
2. Remove the protective cap and rinse the electrode for a short time with deionised water. If the electrode has already been used the sensitive part can
be cleaned with a soft toothbrush and a mild soap solution, and then rinsed for a short time with deionised water. After rinsing the electrode should
only be dabbed. Any rubbing of the pH-sensitive glass can increase the response time as a result of electrostatic charge.
3. Check the space behind the pH sensitive glass for air bubbles and remove any air bubbles that may be present by shaking the electrode slightly in a
vertical direction.
4. Place the electrode into the armature as described in the instructions for the armature.
5. Connect the electrode and the pH transmitter with the corresponding cable (VP6, VP8, AK9). Observe the connections scheme that accompanies the
cable or the transmitter.
6. Intelligent ISM sensors such as InPro 480X (ISM) and InPro 480X i enable «plug and measure» and expanded diagnostics. Operation of the elec-
trodesin the ISM mode requires the M 700 transmitter as well as an ISM pH-module (2700 i X). For installation, commissioning and operation of the
ISM system please refer to instructions for the transmitter, module and cable.
5. Operation: Calibration of the electrode and pH transmitter
Before a calibration immerse the electrode for 10 minutes in a pH 7.00 or pH 4.01 buffer solution whilst connected it to the transmitter. A 2-point calibra-
tion is recommended, e.g. pH 7.00 and pH 4.01 buffer solutions. For further details please consult the operating instructions for the pH transmitter..
6. Maintenance
1. After each working cycle the electrode tip and diaphragm have to be carefully rinsed with deionised water. Any remaning of the solution being mea-
sured on these parts must be avoided at all costs!
2. If the electrode is not in use it has to be stored with the electrode tip and the diaphragm immersed in a tank of electrolyte (9823/3M KCl ).
3. If the electrode is stored in its armature the advices described under Item 2 apply, although the electrolyte has to be slightly modified for storage
purposes (2 parts of buffer solution pH 9.2 to 10 parts of electrolyte) in order to avoid any corrosion of the armature parts.
4. If an electrode is inadvertently stored in a dry condition for several days it must be rinsed for several hours in a standard storage electrolyte.
5. The plug-in head should occasionally be checked for possible traces of moisture. If necessary clean it thoroughly with deionised water or alcohol and
then dry it off carefully.
7. Removal of sources of malfunction
With a soft toothbrush and water any residues can easily be removed from the electrode. Mild washing agents can also be used. Protein contaminations
on the diaphragm can be removed with the cleaning solution (order no. 51 340 070).
Warning: Solutions containing hydrofluorides damage the pH sensitive part of the electrode.
8. Disposal
It is the user's responsibility to dispose of the sensor in a professional manner. The sensor can contain electronic components that require disposal such
that no persons or the environment are endangered.
9. Guarantee
On manufacturing defects 12 months after delivery
10. Storage conditions
We recommend that the electrodes are stored at room temperature.
