Practical handling
Positioning
To position TurningMattress: Position TurningMattress in the bed
with the cotton extension piece at the head end.
Use
The carer grasps the sheet over TurningMattress using a
"flourbag grip" or an "axe grip". Then, with arms stretched at the
level of the user's shoulders and hips, with one foot forward and
using weight transference, the carer pulls the user out to the
edge of the bed:
The carer bends slightly at the knee and, with elbows close into
the body, straightens up, thus turning the user on their side
(Illustration 1). Alternatively, a carer on the opposite side grasps
the sheet and turns the user using weight transference.
In connection with positioning the user's back can be supported
using a rolled TurningMattress or a Positioning Wedge.
When positioning is completed, the user can be returned to lie
on his/her back or pushed back to the middle of the bed.
A cover/sheet or absorbent sheet can also be fitted if required.
Raising the head end
The head end of TurningMattress has a cotton fabric extension
which can be folded down behind the bed/under the mattress
when the head end is raised. This prevents the user from sliding
down.
At the same time, to achieve a comfortable seated position,
it will often be beneficial to position a rolled TurningMattress
behind the user's knees.
Adjustment:
To smooth TurningMattress, two carers pull diagonally in each
corner of the top part of TurningMattress and in the waterproof
cover.
