Launched in the 1930s
and patented for Patek
Philippe in 1959, the World Time watch has
acquired a cult following among globetrotters and
admirers of high-end mechanical timepieces. With
its two rotating scales, it simultaneously and per-
manently displays the time in all of the world's
24 time zones. In 1999, this ingenious watch was
endowed with a further refinement: a patented
single-pusher adjustment mechanism that corrects
all displays at the same time without affecting the
precise rate of the movement. This feature is exclu-
sive to Patek Philippe World Time watches.
from the earth to the moon
On the occasion of its 175th anniversary, Patek
Philippe has reinterpreted this legendary time-
keeping instrument. The traditional guilloched
sunburst pattern in the center of the dial has been
replaced with a moon-phase display that estab-
lishes new technical and aesthetic standards. To
implement this feature, the manufacture developed
the new self-winding caliber 240 HU LU move-
ment. In contrast to conventional moon-phase
indications based on an aperture over a two-moon
disk, Patek Philippe's engineers created a display
with a large single moon that rotates clockwise
about the center of the dial. The system relies on
two extremely thin mineral glass disks. Within one
lunation, the lower disk with the earth's satellite
performs a complete revolution in slightly more
than 29.53 days.
