These instructions explain how to correctly use your equipment. Only certain
techniques and uses are described. The warning symbols inform you of some

This product is intended for use with helicopter evacuation techniques.
These techniques are specific to each rescue unit, which must complete
its own risk analysis and any additional testing required for its activities.
Starting with the identified risks, you must provide the technical information
and define training suitable for these techniques, according to current
regulations in your country.
1. Field of application
Personal protective equipment (PPE) used for fall protection.
Lanyard for helicopter evacuation from a belay station. Allows drop-off and recovery
phases to be secured for a rescuer and/or victim tethered to a belay station.
This product must not be pushed beyond its limits, nor be used for any purpose
other than that for which it is designed.
WARNING
Activities involving the use of this equipment are inherently dangerous.

Before using this equipment, you must:
- Read and understand all Instructions for Use.
- Get specific training in its proper use.
- Become acquainted with its capabilities and limitations.
- Understand and accept the risks involved.
Failure to heed any of these warnings may result in severe injury or death.
Responsibility
WARNING: training is essential before use. This training must be suitable for the
practices defined in the Field of Application.
This product must only be used by competent and responsible persons, or those
placed under the direct and visual control of a competent and responsible person.
Gaining an adequate apprenticeship in appropriate techniques and methods of
protection is your own responsibility.
You personally assume all risks and responsibilities for all damage, injury or death
which may occur during or following incorrect use of our products in any manner
whatsoever. If you are not able, or not in a position to assume this responsibility or
to take this risk, do not use this equipment.
2. Nomenclature
(1) Frame, (2) Gate, (3) LEZARD eye, (4) LEZARD tail, (4 bis) EN 362 connector, (5)
Black lanyard for rescuer/victim, (5 bis) EN 362 connector (not included), (6) Litter
attachment point, (7) Lock, (8) Rope adjuster.
Principal materials:
Frame: steel, aluminum alloy.
Lanyards: nylon (rope), polyester, high-modulus polyethylene.

3. Working principle

During an evacuation, in the approach or recovery phase, there is a period where
the rescuer is attached to the helicopter and the cliff at the same time; this situation
is critical, especially when there is turbulence. The LEZARD is a lanyard that
allows this phase to be secured. In the approach or recovery phase, the lanyard
is attached below the helicopter with one or two persons suspended from the
LEZARD's black lanyards and the tail of the LEZARD is attached to the belay
station. If a tensile load of at least 20 kg is applied to the adjustable lanyard (in
case the helicopter leaves unexpectedly), the LEZARD releases the LEZARD tail.
The LEZARD tail remains attached to the cliff, and the rescuer and/or victim stay
attached to the helicopter.
4. Inspection, points to verify
Your safety depends upon the integrity of your equipment.
Petzl recommends a detailed inspection by a competent person at least once every
12 months (depending on current regulations in your country, and your conditions
of usage). Warning: your intensity of use may cause you to inspect your PPE more
frequently. Follow the procedures described at Petzl.com. Record the results on
your PPE inspection form: type, model, manufacturer contact info, serial number or
individual number, dates: manufacture, purchase, first use, next periodic inspection;
problems, comments, inspector's name and signature.
After each use
1. Washing/rinsing
Be sure to always rinse in fresh water if the LEZARD is used in a marine
environment. Remove sand if necessary. Wash your equipment with soap and water
if necessary and rinse with clean water.
2. Checking the general condition
Lanyards: check the condition of the webbing and of the safety stitching. Look for
cuts, damage and wear due to use and to heat. Be particularly careful to check for
cut or loose threads.
Check the condition of the rope adjuster.
Frame: verify the absence of any cracks, deformation, corrosion.
Connectors: verify the absence of any cracks, deformation, corrosion. Open the
gate and verify that it closes and locks itself automatically when released. The
Keylock slot must not be blocked (dirt, pebbles...).
3. Function test
Verify that the LEZARD tail release mechanism is functioning properly:
A. Attach the LEZARD eye to a fixed anchor, suspend yourself from the two rescuer/
victim lanyards. Pull hard on the LEZARD tail (around 20 kg).
B. Verify that the tail detaches.
C. Put the tail back in place and close the gate.
D. Suspend yourself again and verify that the lock moves freely.
4. Drying
After drying, the LEZARD can be stored. It is ready for a future operation.
Warning: equipment that has been used in an operation must not be placed back in
service without an inspection.
During use
It is important to regularly monitor the condition of the product and its connections
to the other equipment in the system. Make sure that all items of equipment are
correctly positioned with respect to each other.
5. Compatibility
Verify that this product is compatible with the other elements of the system in your
application (compatible = good functional interaction).
Equipment used with your LEZARD must meet current standards in your country
(e.g. EN 362 carabiners). For the LEZARD tail, use only Petzl adjustable lanyards
(replacement lanyards for LEZARD) designed to work with the LEZARD.
Before use, always verify compatibility between the LEZARD eye and the helicopter
hook.

6. Evacuation of a victim and the rescuer
A. Rescuer drop-off
1. The LEZARD eye is attached to the helicopter winch.
The rescuer is tethered to the LEZARD by the two black lanyards or two rescuers
are tethered, one on each of the black lanyards. Warning: do not tether yourself
to the LEZARD tail. The helicopter mechanic verifies that the rescuer is correctly
attached to the LEZARD before departure.
The rescuer adjusts the length of the LEZARD tail before the drop-off phase.
2. Make sure the tail is not tangled in the black lanyards.
Warning: do not adjust the LEZARD tail while the helicopter cable is still attached
to the LEZARD: there is a risk of partially opening the LEZARD gate.
3. Before detaching the helicopter cable, the rescuer checks that the gate is
correctly closed.
In the event of partial opening, the rescuer closes it manually.
Once the helicopter cable is slack, the rescuer removes the cable from the
LEZARD eye. Once the cable has been detached, the rescuer can then adjust the
LEZARD tail.
Warning: in the case of a dubious belay station (very low or no strength in an
upward pull, for example a webbing sling around a horn), install an independent
belay station for the LEZARD.
B. Preparing the evacuation
One black lanyard is attached to the rescuer. The other black lanyard is attached
to the victim or the litter is attached to the litter attachment point.
Verify the LEZARD is correctly installed. Be sure to disconnect any other
attachment to the cliff (e.g. other rescuer lanyard or victim lanyard).
WARNING: if the cable is cut when the rescuer and/or victim are on the LEZARD,
the LEZARD will release due to the weight of the cable on the lock.
C. Evacuation
Attach the helicopter winch to the LEZARD eye. Verify that the helicopter hook is
correctly seated against the lock. When the cable is taut, the rescuer detaches the
tail from the belay station.

7. Additional information

This product meets the requirements of Regulation (EU) 2016/425 on personal
protective equipment. The EU declaration of conformity is available at Petzl.com.
- The melting point of high-modulus polyethylene (140° C) is lower than that of
nylon and polyester.
- If there is a risk of falling, limit slack in the lanyard as much as possible.
- Avoid areas where there is a fall risk.
- If you think there is a risk of the lanyard coming into contact with a sharp edge,
be sure to take appropriate precautions.
- This lanyard is not designed for making choker hitches.
- You must have a rescue plan and the means to rapidly implement it in case of
difficulties encountered while using this equipment.
- The anchor point for the system should preferably be located above the user's
position and should meet the requirements of the EN 795 standard (12 kN
minimum strength).
- In a fall arrest system, it is essential to check the required clearance below the
user before each use, in order to avoid hitting the ground or an obstacle in the
event of a fall.
- Make sure that the anchor point is correctly positioned, in order to limit the risk
and the length of a fall.
- A fall arrest harness is the only device allowable for supporting the body in a fall
arrest system.
- When using multiple items of equipment, a dangerous situation can arise in which
the safety function of an item of equipment can be affected by the safety function
of another item of equipment.
- WARNING: ensure that your products do not rub against abrasive or sharp
surfaces.
- Users must be medically fit for activities at height. WARNING: inert suspension in
a harness can result in serious injury or death.
- The Instructions for Use for each item of equipment used in conjunction with this
product must be followed.
- The Instructions for Use must be provided to the user of this equipment, in the
language of the country where the equipment is used.
- Make sure the markings on the product are legible.
A. Lifetime: 10 years.
When to retire your equipment:
WARNING: an exceptional event can lead you to retire a product after only one
use, depending on the type and intensity of usage and the environment of usage
(harsh environments, marine environments, sharp edges, extreme temperatures,
chemicals...).
A product must be retired when:
- It has been subjected to a major fall or load.
- It fails to pass inspection. You have any doubt as to its reliability.
- You do not know its full usage history.
- When it becomes obsolete due to changes in legislation, standards, technique or
incompatibility with other equipment...
Destroy these products to prevent further use.
