Application
The full face mask MSA AUER 3 S with standard thread connec-
tor according to EN 148-1 ist not a complete respiratory protec-
tive device by itself, but serves as facepiece (EN 136) for use
with respiratory filters, compressed air breathing apparatus,
fresh air hose breathing apparatus and compressed air line
breathing apparatus. The relevant instructions for use of these
apparatus and applicable national standards and regulations
must be observed. Users with facial hair like beards or side-
burns are not likely to achieve a tight seal since the hair will
break the facepiece-to-face seal. In order to achieve a tight fit for
people requiring prescription eyewear, the 3 S spectacle kit
must be used.
The mask is in accordance with currently valid performance
requirements (EN 136, class 3) and Directive (89/686/EEC) and
has EC mark of conformity.

Design and Operation

Design (Fig. 1)
3.2
Operation
The inhalation air flows from the connector of the mask past the
inhalation valve to the inside of the lens (thus keeping the lens
largely fog-free) and then through the check valves into the nose
cup. The exhalation air passes through the exhalation valve
directly to the ambient atmosphere.

Use
4.1
Readiness
The mask is kept ready for use either suspended by the carrying
strap in front of the chest or inside the carrier.
When the mask is suspended in front of the chest, the hook of
the carrying strap is fastened to the forehead buckle in order to
protect the mask from dirt.
4.2
Donning (Fig. 2 and 3)
Spread the head harness with both hands and place chin into
chin stop. Pull harness over head (make sure that straps lie flat
against head) and tighten straps evenly and firmly, starting with
neck straps, then temple straps and lastly the forehead strap.
4.3
Leak Test (Fig. 4)
In order to check the facepiece-to-face seal, a leak test must be
performed. To do this, cover the connector opening or the air
intake of the filter with the palm of the hand. When inhaling and
holding the breath no air shall leak in. The mask must pass the
leak test before each use. A more reliable leak test is with the
complete respirator in a test chamber.
4.4
Removal (Fig. 5 and 6)
To loosen the head harness, push the buckles forward. Then
grasp the mask by the connector (not the exhalation valve) and
pull it backwards over the head.
5
Cleaning, Maintenance and Disinfection
5.1
Cleaning
The dirty mask is cleaned with lukewarm water containing a
mild detergent. Prior to washing, remove inhalation and exhala-
tion valve discs, unbutton the nose cup and unscrew the speak-
ing diaphragm with the special tool (Part No. D2055 038). These
components are cleaned separately and reassembled only after
drying. Cleaned parts must not be dried in radiant heat (sun-
light, radiators). When using a drying cabinet the temperature
must not exceed 50 °C.
5.2
Disinfection
Masks should be disinfected after having been cleaned accord-
ing to Sect. 5.1. The Disinfectant AUER 90 is recommended.
Information about the concentration and time is contained in the
instructions for use of the disinfectant. After disinfecting thor-
oughly flush all components with water, dry and reassemble.
5.3
Maintenance
Maintenance includes testing the functioning and tightness of
the mask and exhalation valve, as well as exchanging certain
components. See Table 7 for test and replacement intervals. In
addition it must be checked whether the mask and especially all
valve discs are not damaged. Only MSA AUER spare parts must
be used for repair. After every cleaning or after parts have been
replaced a tightness test must be made.
For further maintenance work and intervals refer to table 7.
5.3.1 Maintenance of the exhalation valve
In case of a leak remove the exhalation valve disc by pulling it
off the valve housing and replace it with a new one, or replace
the entire exhalation valve assembly. To do this, unscrew the
threaded socket from the mask inside with the special tool
(Fig. 7).
The air vents of the protective housing are turned to the front
side. This is the position according to European approval. After
