How to use

The following application notes are to be considered safety in-
structions. They must be strictly observed in order to avoid burn-
ing the patient.
5.1

Correct patient positioning for electrosurgery

Always position the patient in such a way that they are electri-
cally insulated on a dry, absorbent, leakproof sheet. Pay atten-
tion to the following:
• The patient must be fully electrically insulated (body and all
extremities).
• No patient contact with metal parts (e.g. operating tables,
brackets, jewelry).
• No patient contact with liquids (e.g. disinfectants, perspira-
tion, bodily fluids, wet sheets).
• Avoid skin-to-skin contact; where appropriate, insulate us-
ing dry cloths/gauze (extremities of the body, between folds
of the body).
• No patient contact with other materials that conduct elec-
tricity (e.g. ventilation tubes, tubes filled with IV fluid, staff
jewelry).
• If liquid collects beside or underneath the patient during sur-
gery, dry it immediately.
• If liquid collects underneath the return electrode during sur-
gery, replace the return electrode immediately.
