Illumination equipment

So far, no damage to the patient's eyes by optical irradiation has been
observed. Nevertheless, we recommend that you reduce the light
intensity directly incident on the patient's eye to the minimum level
required for the diagnosis.
Principle
Apply as little light as possible and only as much as necessary.
The light dose depends on illuminance and exposure time.
Very long exposure times at the same area of the retina are not typical,
as slit lamp examination is a dynamic process.
You may reduce the illuminance on the fundus as follows:
Reduce the light brightness.
Do not dilate the patient's pupil unless it is really necessary.
Only adjust the size of the illuminated area (slit width, slit length) as
large as possible.
For oberservation, adjust the illumination angles as large as possible.
Use colour filter or, in special cases, a diffusing screen.
Warning
Take particular care, when examining infants, aphakic patients.
Recommendation
Turn down the lamp before every examination. This will protect the
patient against excessive brightness at the beginning of the examination
and increase the lamp life.
