Chapter 1: Installation and user's guide

This part of the manual consists of an introduction, installation instructions,
and instructions for using and maintaining this 8x4x24 Slimline CD-RW drive.

Introduction

This section introduces the 8x4x24 Slimline CD-RW drive and the software that
comes with it. This section also contains some information you will need
before you install the option.

Product description

The IBM 8x4x24 Slimline CD-RW drive can write and read CD-RW and
CD-Recordable (CD-R) discs, and can read mass-produced stamped CDs.
CD-RWs created with this drive are compatible with multi-read (MR) CD-ROM
and DVD-ROM drives. Older non-MR CD-ROM drives can read only CD-R
and CD-ROM discs.
The drive can write to a CD-R disc at up to eight times the standard CD-ROM
speed, recording data at up to 1200 KB
record approximately 650 MB
minutes. The drive writes to CD-RW and CD-R discs at different speeds. The
drive can write to a high speed CD-RW disc at up to four times the standard
CD-ROM speed, recording data at up to 600 KB per second. At this rate, the
drive can record approximately 530 MB of information on a CD-RW disc in
about 14 minutes. The drive can also read data at up to 24 times the standard
CD-ROM speed, or 3600 KB per second. This 8x4x24 drive can write standard
CD-R and CD-RW media.
Note: To use the CD-recording function, you must install the Easy CD Creator
4 or DirectCD software (included) for Microsoft
®
Windows
Millennium (Me). For more information on the Easy CD Creator 4 and
DirectCD software, see "Step 8. Installing the Easy CD Creator and
DirectCD software" on page 1-7.
This Slimline drive can be installed only in a computer that uses the integrated
drive electronics (IDE) or the enhanced IDE architecture.
In addition to this manual, this option kit includes: One
