6.4. Driving with the wheelchair
• Sit in your Bischoff & Bischoff wheelchair. Make sure that you sit as
far back as possible.
• Locomotion is via the handrims on the drive wheels.
• Place your hands with thumb and bent index finger on the hand-
rims (Fig. 36).

• From this position push the wheelchair with both hands.
• Drive to the right: hold the right handrim and continue to push only
the left handrim.
• Drive to the left: perform the push in reverse.
• Turning on the spot: push the handrims against each other with
both hands at the same time.
• Braking: reduce the speed of the handrim with your hands.
• Carry out the first driving attempts carefully until you have
become accustomed to the wheelchair and its driving behaviour.
Wheelchairs have only limited tipping and sliding safety. Take
special care when braking, starting or turning on inclines or decli-
nes. Extreme leaning out of the wheelchair also increases the risk
of tipping over. An anti-tipper reduces this danger. To overcome
obstacles more easily, the attendant can tilt the wheelchair (see
chapter 4.9.1).
