• We recommend you to use the welding helmet for a period of 10 years. The duration of use
depends on various factors such as way of use, cleaning, storage and maintenance. Frequent
inspections and replacement in case of damage are recommended.
• A distance of at least 20" (50cm), and never less than 10" (25cm), between the welding arc and
the welder eyes is recommended for all welding applications.
• SUREWERX USA INC operates a policy of continuous improvement. We therefore reserve the
right to make changes and improvements to any of our products without notice.
USAGE
An ADF built into a welding helmet protects the eyes, face, ears and neck against direct and indirect
hazardous light of the welding arc. In case that you have only bought a filter without the helmet, you
need to select the appropriate helmet designed to be used in combination with an auto-darkening weld-
ing protection filter. It has to allow the filter, including the internal and external protection plates, to be
adequately mounted into the helmet. There should be no increased point tensions caused by the fixing
frame or mounting system, as they could cause severe damage to the filter. Make sure that solar cells
and photo- sensors are not covered by any part of the helmet, as this could prevent the proper operation
of the filter. If any of these conditions occur, the filter may not be suitable for use.
Range of Application
The 555 auto-darkening filters are suitable for all types of electro-welding: covered electrodes (MMA,
Stick), MIG/MAG, TIG/WIG, plasma welding, and cutting.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Check for the required protection for specific welding procedure and select the recommended
shade, light sensitivity as well as opening time delay.
Setting the Shade: The auto-darkening filter has two shade ranges, i.e. 5-8 and 9-14. The shade
range can be selected by pressing the WELD button for 9-14 or the CUT button for 5-8 which is located
on the filter inside the helmet. The shade is adjusted internally using the + and – arrows on the bottom
right of the ADF. The shade range is indicated on the left hand display showing a shaded triangle next
to the mode. The ADF states the selected shade on the chose range in digital format on the right hand
display. (Please note 1 press of the +/- button increase/ decreases the shade by 1)
Fine tuning the shade. The auto-darken filters has fine tune adjustment whilst in cutting or weld-
ing mode. This allows you to fine tune the shade in small increments of 0.2 shade to better suit the
application. The shade can go up or down 1 complete shade using this function. To use the fine tuning
function, turn the external know Anti clockwise to increase or clock wise to decrease.
Setting the Sensitivity: Most welding applications can be performed with welding light sensitivity set
to maximum. The maximum sensitivity level is appropriate for low welding current work, TIG, or special
applications.
The welding light sensitivity has to be reduced only in some specific surrounding lighting conditions in
order to avoid unwanted triggering. As a simple rule for optimum performance, it is recommended to
set sensitivity to the maximum at the beginning and then gradually reduce it, until the filter reacts only
to the welding light flashes and without annoying spurious triggering due to ambient light conditions
(direct sun, intensive artificial light, neighbouring welder's arcs etc.).To set the Sensitivity to maximum
press the + button labelled SENSI to reduce the ADF'S Sensitive press the – button below (note each
press of the +/- increases/ reduces the level by 1)
Setting the Delay: The opening time delay can be adjusted from 0.1 to 1.0 seconds. It is recommend-
ed to use a shorter delay with spot welding applications and a longer delay with applications using
higher currents and longer welding intervals. Longer delay can also be used for low current TIG weld-
ing in order to prevent the filter opening when the light path to the sensors is temporarily obstructed by
a hand, torch, etc. direct sun, intensive artificial light, neighbouring welder's arcs etc.). To set the delay
to maximum press the + button labelled DELAY to reduce the ADF'S delay press the – button below
(note each press of the +/- increases/ reduces the level by 1)
