Question
Should I put the cuff on
my left or right arm? What
is the difference?
Troubleshooting
Problem
Blood pressure
results are not
within typical
range.
Answer
Blood pressure can be measured on
both arms. However, to obtain compa-
rable results, you should always use the
same arm. Measurements on the left
arm can provide more accurate results
as they are closer to the heart.
Possible cause
The cuff is too tight or
not properly positioned
on the arm.
Inaccurate measure-
ment results due to
body or blood pressure
monitor movement.
Troubleshooting
Solution
Reposition the cuff
(approximately 0.39–
0.78" (1–2 cm)) above
the elbow joint.
Sit in a relaxed po-
sition with the arm
placed near the heart.
Do not move and do
not speak while per-
forming a measure-
ment. Make sure that
the blood pressure
monitor is placed in
a stationary position
throughout the entire
measurement.
