BS 120's connecting lead plug can now be
plugged into the CMS-GE's coupling socket.
The CMS-GE or CMS-MOD-BS 120 connect-
ing lead is then connected to a Festool dust
extractor or to the mains. The tool is now
ready for operation, though it should not be
switched on before a rough adjustment of the
belt. The tool is switched on by pressing the
green switch (1.3). The red button is the OFF
button. The switch (1.2) has a neutral circuit
breaker. When the power is interrupted the
machine does not automatically restart when
the power is restored. The green ON button
has to be pressed.
6 Changing the sanding belt
Sanding belts with different grains are avail-
able from the range of accessories for various
sanding and polishing work. The roller closest
to the switch (sanding roller 1.5) can be piv-
oted out of its position to change the sanding
belt. Push the handle (3.1) of the clamping
lever (3.2) backwards (towards the motor).
If the handle is not pressed down during this
movement the threaded stem in the lever
engages in a catch and holds the sanding
roller in its rear position. The sanding belt
can now be easily changed. If the handle of
the locking lever (3.1) is pressed down the
catch is released. The roller then automati-
cally swings back into its working position and
the sanding belt is tightened. If the lever or
suspension is slightly bent so that the catch
is no longer secure the threaded stem can be
adjusted accordingly (3.2).
7 Adjustments to the CMS-MOD-BS 120
7.1 Adjusting the belt
If the central axes of the two sanding rolls
are not completely parallel, the sanding belt
tends to drift to one side. To adjust the run-
ning of the belt the axis of the roller furthest
away from the switch (drive roller) can be
slightly tilted by turning the rotary knob (3.3).
Clockwise adjustment (belt runs downwards).
Before switching the tool on check whether
the sanding belt runs up or down by rotat-
ing the belt by hand. Move the belt firmly by
hand a number of rotations, the more rota-
tions which are made by the belt the easier
it ease to check its true running. A ceramic
starting plate (1.12) has been fitted to start
the belt if this runs slightly out of true down-
wards. The rear sanding belt cover (1.9) is
moved to within 4 mm of the sanding belt
and screwed to the table before starting the
machine. The dust extractor should also be
positioned correctly.
7.2 Height adjustment
A sanding belt usually wears most in the
area directly above the table top. To ensure

that the sanding belt wears evenly across its
whole width one side of the sanding unit can
be lowered. Release the rotary knob (2.4)
and lower accordingly with the grip (2.4) of
the swivel arm on the side of the table op-
posite the switch. Retighten the swivel arm
after adjustment. The stop screw (2.5) can
be set accordingly to ensure that the sanding
rotter is exactly vertical to the tabletop when
swivelled back into its normal position.
8 Working with the belt sander
8.1 Face sanding
The useful sanding area for face sanding is
the part of the belt between the two markings
on the upper roller guard (1.6).
8.2 Sanding rounded parts
Free access to the pivoted sanding roller
enables rounded parts to be sanded. Sanding
rollers with various diameters can be fitted to
sand various shaped rounded parts (1.5).
9 Changing the sanding roller
The CMS-MOD-BS 120 is fitted with standard
sanding rollers with a diameter of 73.5 mm.
The following are available as accessories:
– Sanding roller set CWD 55 × 120, with
a roller diameter of 53.5 mm (Order No.
488 032)
– Sanding roller set CWD 105 × 120, with
a roller diameter of 102 mm (Order No.
488 031)
When changing the roller the upper roller
guard (1.8), the sheet metal washer in the
tabletop matching the roller diameter (1.4)
and the ceramic starting plate (1.12) must
also be replaced. Release the locking screw
(1.10) with a 6 mm hexagon key to replace
the roller.
Attention! Do not remove the wavy spring
washer between the shaft collar and roller.
Fit other roller and tighten in place. Insert
sanding belt and tension by releasing the
lever catch. Then fit the sheet metal washer
which matches the roller diameter so that
the internal contour of the insert is 2–3 mm
from the sanding belt. Finally replace the up-
per sanding roller guard and fasten the rear
belt cover at a distance of 3–4 mm from the
sanding belt.
10 Dust extraction
There are two connections for a dust extrac-
tor to enable dust-free working with the belt
sander. The collector (2.1) should hereby
be placed close to the area of work, ap-
prox. 2 mm away from the sanding belt and
fastened to the tabletop. The dust extractor
should be connected to the collector's lower
suction adapter. The upper suction adapter is
connected to the drive roller guard's suction
