CYLINDER MAY EXPLODE IF DAMAGED: Use only compressed gas cylinders containing the
correct shielding gas for the process used and properly operating regulators designed for the gas and
pressure used. Always keep cylinders in an upright position securely chained to a fixed support. Do
not move or transport gas cylinders with the protection cap removed. Do not allow the electrode,
electrode holder, work clamp or any other electrically live part to touch a gas cylinder. Gas cylinders
must be located away from areas where they may be subjected to physical damage or the welding
process including sparks and heat sources.
CAUTION: The high frequency used for contact-free ignition with TIG (GTAW) welding, can interfere
HF
with the operation of insufficiently shielded computer equipment, EDP centers and industrial robots,
even causing complete system breakdown. TIG (GTAW) welding may interfere with electronic
telephone networks and with radio and TV reception.

Installation and Operator Instructions

Read this entire section before installation or operation
of the machine.
Definitions of welding terms
Non-synergic welding modes: A Non-synergic
welding mode requires all welding process variables
to be set by the operator.
Synergic welding modes: A Synergic welding
mode offers the simplicity of single knob control.
The machine will select the correct voltage and
current based on the wire feed speed (WFS) set by
the operator.
WFS: Wire Feed Speed
CC: Constant Current
CV: Constant Voltage
GMAW: Gas Metal Arc welding
GMAW-P: Gas Metal Arc welding-(Pulse Arc)
GMAW-S: Gas Metal Arc welding-(Short Circuiting
Arc)
GTAW: Gas Tungsten Arc welding
GTAW-P: Gas Tungsten Arc welding-(Pulse Arc)
PAW: Plasma Arc welding
SMAW: Shielded Metal Arc welding
SW: Stud Arc Welding
SAW: Submerged Arc Welding
SAW-S: Submerged Arc Welding-(Series)
STT: Surface Tension Transfer
FCAW: Flux Core Arc Welding
CAC: Carbon Arc Cutting
Product description
The Power Wave is a semi-automatic, high performance,
digitally controlled inverter welding power source
capable of complex, high-speed waveform control;
designed to be a part of a modular, multi-process
welding system. Depending on configuration and
properly equipped, it can support CC, CV, GMAW,
GMAW-P, FCAW, SMAW, GTAW, CAC, and pulse
welding modes.
455M/STT only: support also the STT mode.
(Refer to the technical specification section for detail
about the output ratings).
The Power Wave is designed to be used with the semi
automatic family of Power Feed wire feeders (specifically
the Power Feed M family), operating as a system. Each
component in the system has special circuitry to "talk
with" the other system components, so each component
(power source, wire feeder, user interface) knows what
the other is doing at all times. These components
communicate with ArcLink.
Only ArcLink compatible Power Feed semi-automatic
wire feeders and users interfaces may be used. Other
Lincoln wire feeders or non-Lincoln wire feeders cannot
be used.
Duty cycle and time period
The Power Feed wire feeders are capable of welding at
100% duty cycle (continuous welding). The Power
Wave will be the limiting factor in determining system
duty cycle capability. Note that the duty cycle is based
upon a ten minute period. A 60% duty cycle represents
6 minutes of welding and 4 minutes of idling in a ten
minute period.
Location and Environment
The Power Wave must operate in indoor environments
only. However, it is important that simple preventative
measures are followed to assure long life and reliable
operation.
This machine has a protection rating of IP23S and
must not be placed under falling water or submerge
any parts of it in water. Doing so may cause
improper operation as well as pose a safety hazard.
The best practice is to keep the Power Wave in a
dry, sheltered area.
Do not place or operate this machine on a surface
with an incline greater than 15° from horizontal.
This machine must be located where there is free
circulation of clean air without restrictions for air
movement to and from the air vents. Do not cover
the machine with paper, cloth or rags when
switched on.
Dirt and dust that can be drawn into the machine
should be kept to a minimum.
This machine is equipped with F.A.N. (fan as
needed) circuitry. The fan runs whenever the output
is enabled, whether under loaded or open circuit
conditions. The fan also runs for a period of time
(approximately 5 minutes) after the output is
disabled, to ensure all components are properly
cooled. If desired, the F.A.N. feature can be
disabled (causing the fan to run whenever the
machine is on). To disable F.A.N., connect leads
444 and X3A together at the output of the solid state
fan control relay, located on the back of the Control
PC board enclosure (see Wiring Diagram).
Locate the machine away from radio controlled
machinery. Normal operation may adversely affect
the operation of nearby radio controlled machinery,
which may result in injury or equipment damage.
Read the section on electromagnetic compatibility in
this manual.
Do not operate in areas with an ambient
