5. Accessories
Slides: Place the specimen you wish to observe on a slide. After you have covered it with some water
or gum media, you can place a cover slip on top.
Cover slips: Use the cover slips to cover specimens that you have placed on a slide in order to protect
them while you observe them with the microscope.
Tweezers: These are a type of pincers that you can use to pick up small objects.
Dissecting needle: A dissecting needle can be used for many things. You can use it to scratch the
surface of a specimen, to fi x objects in place or to stir liquids.

6. Care and maintenance

The microscope is a high-quality optical appliance. Therefore you should make sure that dust and
moisture do not come into contact with your microscope. Avoid putting fi ngerprints on any optical
surfaces.
If dust or dirt has gotten onto your microscope or the accessories, you should fi rst remove the dirt with
a soft brush. Then clean the soiled area with a soft, lint-free cloth. To remove fi ngerprints from the opti-
cal surfaces, it is best to use a lint-free, soft cloth, to which you have applied some alcohol.
