8 DMX Control

DMX is short for Digital Multiplex and allows the
digital control of several DMX units via a common
control line. For operation via a DMX light controller
(e. g. DMX-1440 or DMX-510USB from "img Stage
Line") the light effect panel is equipped with 26
DMX control channels. However, it can also be
controlled via 3, 5, 8, 14 or 24 channels only. The
functions of the channels and the corresponding
DMX values can be found in chapter 8.4.
8.1 Connections
As a DMX interface the unit is equipped with 3-pole
XLR connections with the following pin configura-
tion:
pin 1 = ground, 2 = DMX-, 3 = DMX+
For connection, special cables for high data flow
should be used. Standard microphone cables with
screening and a minimum cross section of 2 ×
0,22 mm
2
and with a capacity as low as possible
can only be recommended for a total cable length
of up to 100 m. For cable lengths exceeding 150 m
it is recommended to insert a DMX level matching
amplifier (e. g. SR-103DMX from "img Stage Line").
1) Connect the control input DMX IN (3) to the DMX
output of the light controller.
2) Connect the control output DMX OUT (4) to the
control input DMX IN of the next light effect unit.
Connect its output again to the input of the fol-
lowing unit, etc. until all light effect units are con-
nected in a chain.
3) To prevent interferences in signal transmission,
for long cables or for a great number of units
connected in series, terminate the control output
of the last unit of the chain with a 120 Ω resistor
(> 0.3 W): Connect a corresponding terminating
plug (e. g. DLT-123 from "img Stage Line") to the
output jack.

8.2 Adjusting the number of DMX channels

The number of DMX channels depends on the
functions required and possibly also on the number
of control channels available on the light controller.
See chapter 8.4 for the functions which are each
possible in the modes of 3, 5, 8, 14, 24 and 26
channels. Select the number of DMX channels
accordingly:
1) Press the button MENU / ESC so many times
until the main menu is reached.
2) Select the option
button UP or DOWN.
in the main menu with the
3) Press the button ENTER: the channel mode
presently adjusted is displayed:
= 3-channel mode
= 5-channel mode
= 8-channel mode
= 14-channel mode
= 24-channel mode
= 26-channel mode
4) Select the desired number of channels with the
button UP or DOWN.

8.3 Adjusting the start address

For controlling the light effect panel adjust a DMX
start address for its first DMX channel. The follow-
ing DMX channels are then automatically assigned
to the following addresses.
Examples:
– in the 26-channel mode, for start address 1, the chan-
nels 2 to 26 are assigned to the addresses 2 to 26. The
address 27 is the next possible free start address for
the following DMX-controlled unit.
– in the 3-channel mode, for start address 5, the chan-
nels 2 and 3 are assigned to the addresses 6 and 7.
The address 8 is the next possible free start address
for the following DMX-controlled unit.
– in the 5-channel mode, for start address 17, the chan-
nels 2 to 5 are assigned to the addresses 18 to 21. The
address 22 is the next possible free start address for
the following DMX-controlled unit.
1) Press the button MENU / ESC so many times
until the main menu is reached.
2) Select the option
button UP or DOWN.
3) Press the button ENTER: The present address
adjusted, e. g.
4) Adjust the desired address with the button UP or
DOWN.
After adjusting the start address, the light effect
panel can be operated via the DMX controller. The
reception of control signals will be indicated by a
point flashing on the display.
