ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
SAN JUAN
HULL
PHOTO 1: Assemble the hull structure by following the numerical order of the drawing. Before gluing the frames in place make
sure that they are correctly fitted into position "abutting" up against the corresponding slots on the false keel. It is important that
the frames are completely perpendicular to the false keel. For this operation use white glue (carpenter's glue) as the adhesive.
PHOTO 2: Using a pencil, draw a line that divides the deck (no. 15) lengthways into two equal parts.
PHOTO 3: Start to line the deck working from the centre outwards, fitting one sheet of planking alongside the other until it has
been completely covered. For this operation use contact adhesive (carpenter's glue, carefully read the manufacturer's
instructions).
PHOTO 4: Turn the part over and place it on a flat surface, trim off the excess planking. The part should end up as shown in the
photo (no. 5).
PHOTO 5: To simulate the planking and caulking of the deck, use a pencil to highlight the lengthways lines that mark out the
sheets of planking. Also mark alternating crossways lines, 80 mm apart. Finally alongside the crossways lines mark points to
simulate nail heads.
PHOTO 6: Glue the deck (no. 15) onto the structure of the ship. It is important that the deck is correctly adjusted to the top of
the frames and the false keel. Use quick drying glue for this process.
PHOTO 7: Apply glue and attach the part (no. 17), fitting the underside projections into the holes on the deck.
PHOTO 8. Following the same procedure as in photos 2, 3 and 4 line the deck (no. 18) using the planking (no. 19).
PHOTO 9: Simulate the effect of planking and the nail heads on the basis of the same lengths as for the deck (no. 14).
PHOTO 10: Glue the deck (no. 18) onto the frames at the back end of the hull.
PHOTO 11: Line the front of the deck and the bulkhead (n0. 17) using the lining (no. 20).
PHOTO 12: Using a cutter, trim off the lining flush with the deck, following the line shown in the photo.
PHOTO 13: Glue the parts (nos. 21 & 22) onto the deck (no. 18).
PHOTO 14: Line the deck (no. 23) using the planking (no. 24), following the same steps used to assemble the other decks.
PHOTO 15: Trim off the excess lining and simulate a planking effect, as shown in the photo.
PHOTO 16: Attach the deck (no. 23) to the parts (nos. 21 & 22). Line the bulkhead and the front of the deck using the lining (no.
25).
PHOTO 17: Glue the parts (nos. 26 & 27) to the front of the decks, adjusted to the top side of the lining.
PHOTO 18: Glue the battens (nos. 28, 29 & 30) to the bow end of the false keel.
PHOTO 19: In the stern area glue a batten (no. 31) to each side of the false keel, adjusted to he top side of the frames.
PHOTO 20: Glue the part (no. 32) centred and adjusted to the stern of the ship and then glue the part (no. 33) onto the frame as
shown in the photo.
PHOTO 21: Glue the lining sheets (nos. 34 & 35) following the same steps as you used for the decks. Trim off the excess lining
following the profiles of both parts.
PHOTO 22: In order to ensure a good contact surface for the lining strakes, and using a sander, sand down the battens and the
edge of the frames working from bow to stern.
PHOTO 23: Also gently sand down the whole of the central part, following the line marked out by the frames.
PHOTO 24: Carry out the same operation at the ship's stern, sanding down from stern to bow. For these more curved areas
use a half-round file.
PHOTO 25: Also file down the edges of the decks, unifying the surfaces with the frames and respecting the projecting slots of
the decks.
PHOTO 26: Line one side of the bulwarks (no. 36) using the lining (no. 37), bearing in mind that you will have to line one of
each side. Then trim away the lining that covers the slots and the scuppers in the bulwarks and work over using a file.
PHOTO 27: The bulwarks should look like this when you have finished.
PHOTO 28: Apply quick drying glue and fit one of the bulwarks in place, starting from the stern and working towards the bow.
Check photo 30 to see how the bulwarks are adjusted at the stern.
PHOTO 29: Fit the other bulwark onto the other side of the hull. As you can see in the photo, the linings of the two bulwarks
face towards the inside of the ship.
PHOTO 30: Using a sanding block, work over the ship's stern parts, respecting the fit shown in the photo.
PHOTO 31: Line one side of the stern transom (no. 38) using the lining (no. 39), then trim the excess lining off following the
perimeter of the part.
PHOTO 32: Apply quick drying glue and attach the stern transom, with the lining facing the inside of the hull, as shown in the
photo.
PHOTO 33: Trim off and glue the thirty-four stanchions into place against the bulwarks and then adjust them to the height of the
bulwarks, with the help of a cutter or a small saw.
PHOTO 34: Before starting to line the hull, submerge the lining strake (no. 34) in water for approximately half an hour, so that
the wood recovers its elasticity. Starting with the central frames, glue and pin one of the lining strakes to the centre of the hull,
