1. Surface cutting
Rough cutting should be accomplished at large cutting
depths and at a suitable speed so that shavings are
smoothly ejected from the machine. To ensure a
smoothly fi nished surface, fi nish cutting should be
accomplished at small cutting depths and at low feeding
speed.
2. Blade sharpening intervals
Blade sharpening intervals depend on the type of wood
being cut and the cutting depth. However, sharpening
should generally be eff ected after each 500 meters of
cutting operation.
3. Dressing Stone
When a water dressing stone is available, use it after
dipping it suffi ciently in water since such a dressing stone
may be worn during grinding works, fl atten the upper
surface of the dressing stone as often as necessary.

MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION

1. Inspecting the blades
Figure
Page
Continued use of dull or damaged blades will result in
2
99
reduced cutting effi ciency and may cause overloading
of the motor. Sharpen or replace the blades as often as
3
99
necessary.
2. Handling
4
99
CAUTION
The front base, rear base, and cutting depth control
5
99
knob are precisely machined to obtain specifi cally high
precision. If these parts are roughly handled or subjected
6
99
to heavy mechanical impact, it may cause deteriorated
precision and reduced cutting performance. These parts
7
100
must be handled with particular care.
3. Inspecting the mounting screws
8
100
Regularly inspect all mounting screws and ensure that
they are properly tightened. Should any of the screws be
9
100
loose, retighten them immediately. Failure to do so could
result in serious hazard.

4. Maintenance of the motor
The motor unit winding is the very "heart" of the power
11
101
tool. Exercise due care to ensure the winding does not
become damaged and/or wet with oil or water.
12
101
5. Inspecting the carbon brushes (Fig. 15)
The motor employs carbon brushes which are
13
101
consumable parts. Since an excessively worn carbon
14
102
brush can result in motor trouble, replace the carbon
brushes with new ones having the same carbon brush
15
102
No. ⓐ shown in the fi gure when it becomes worn to or
103
near the "wear limit" ⓑ. In addition, always keep carbon
brushes clean and ensue that they slide freely within the
brush holders.
6. Replacing carbon brushes (Fig. 15)
After removing the chip cover, use a slotted screwdriver
to disassemble the brush caps. The carbon brushes can
then be easily removed with the spring.
7. Replacing supply cord
If the replacement of the supply cord is necessary, it has
to be done by Hitachi Authorized Service Center to avoid
a safety hazard.
CAUTION
In the operation and maintenance of power tools, the
safety regulations and standards prescribed in each
country must be observed.
