1. General

The ignition-point stroboscopic timing light is
designed to check the ignition point in Otto
(spark-ignition) engines. Specifically, it shows
the positions of the two timing marks with
respect to each other – the rotating mark on
the fan belt pulley or flywheel, and the fixed
mark on the engine housing.
Ignition point data are contained in the engine
specification charts issued by engine manu-
facturers and in test specification sheets (e.g.
AUTODATA).

2. Connection to the
Ignition System
2.1 Connection to the Automotive
Battery
The ignition-point stroboscopic timing light
operates independent of the local power net-
work. For power supply purposes the connec-
tor cable is attached to the 12-volt vehicle
battery.
For vehicles without battery (e.g. motor bikes
with magneto ignition) a separate 12-volt bat-
tery is required.
2.2 Connecting the Trigger
Clamp-on Pickup
The flash in the timing light is automatically
triggered at the correct time, i.e., at the instant
when the ignition spark is generated in Cylin-
der No. 1. For this purpose, the trigger clamp-
on pickup is attached near the ignition distri-
butor to the ignition cable leading to Cylinder
No. 1. The trigger clamp-on pickup senses the
ignition pulse and feeds it to the flash lamp.
