How Your Kinetico Mach Series
Backwashing Filter Works
Problem water usually has something in it that needs to be removed. Running
your water through a backwashing filter that contains the appropriate media
is basically how it's done. The filtering media traps the matter that needs to
be filtered from your water and allows the virtually particle-free water to
leave the system and be used throughout your home.
Once the media bed is loaded with the trapped particles,
it must be cleansed. This is done through a process
called backwashing. During backwash, water is
forced through the media bed in the opposite
flow direction of the system to clean the par-
ticles off the media and flush them to drain.
Once the process is complete, the media is
again ready to filter your water.
The 2080 Greensand Filter has an additional step
in the backwasing process where it draws in potas-
sium permanganate (KMnO4) that restores the media's
oxidizing capacity.
