Adjust head of bed for patient comfort and return bed to original con guration, considering all applicable safety
rules and protocols. If the decision has been made to use side rails, restraints or other accessories (see related
Risks and Precautions and Safety Information in the Introduction chapter of this manual), then raise and lock
side rails on both sides of the bed and reposition other restraints and accessories.

Incontinence / Drainage

1.
A First Step Select cover sheet or moisture-impermeable, breathable underpads should be used for incontinent
patients.
Dri-Flo Pad breathable underpads are recommended for incontinent patients. They are absorbent and do not
i
block air ow. Do not use plastic-backed underpads. Plastic may tend to block moisture vapor transmission and
air ow from mattress surface.

Watch for incontinence or drainage and provide appropriate skin care following each episode.

Skin Care

1.
Remove excess moisture and keep skin dry and clean.
2.
Maintain proper air pressures in accordance with the Air Pressure Adjustment section of the Patient
Placement chapter of this manual.
3.
Assess patient's skin regularly, particularly in areas where incontinence and drainage occur.
Monitor skin conditions regularly, especially at bony prominences and areas where moisture or incontinence
may occur or collect, and consider adjunct or alternative therapies for high acuity patients. Early intervention
may be essential to preventing serious skin breakdown.

Care and Cleaning

The following are the manufacturer's recommended daily and weekly cleaning and infection control procedures for the
First Step Select Therapy System while in use. If this product is to be purchased, or utilized for long term rentals, it is
recommended that the manufacturer be contacted for recommended infection control procedures to be utilized by the
facility.
It is recommended that all sections of this guide be reviewed prior to product use. Carefully read the Contraindications,
Safety Information and Risks and Precautions sections in the Introduction chapter of this manual prior to performing
care and cleaning procedures on the First Step Select Therapeutic Surface.

Daily Care and Cleaning of First Step Select Therapy System While in Use

The patient does not need to be removed from the therapeutic surface when performing daily cleaning
procedures. The patient may be bathed as the top surface is being cleaned.

For daily care and cleaning, refer to the procedures in the Patient Bathing section of the Nursing Care chapter in
this manual.

Weekly Care and Cleaning of First Step Select Therapeutic Surface While in Use

In addition to daily care and cleaning, the cover sheet should be laundered or replaced weekly, or more often as needed.
Excessively soiled therapy system and cover sheets should be replaced and cleaned as described in the Infection
Control Procedures of this chapter.

Disassembly of First Step Select Therapeutic Surface and Cover Sheet for Laundering and Cleaning

1.
Press power button to deactivate therapy control unit.
2.
Unplug therapy control unit from wall outlet.
3.
Disconnect hose set from therapy control unit and therapeutic surface.
4.
Remove cover sheet (if used).

Infection Control Procedures

Follow all regulations outlined in OSHA Occupational Exposure to Blood borne Pathogens 29 CFR Part 1910.30
regarding infection control procedures to be used when cleaning the First Step Select Therapy System.
