Fig 1: OptraGate in place. It does not interfere with the
patient's occlusion.
1. Select the appropriate sized OptraGate. The size (R for
regular, S for small or J for Junior) is printed on the left
tab.
2. It is advisable to moisten the OptraGate with water
prior to using it, as this will facilitate insertion.
3. The OptraGate may be inserted best from both the
12 o'clock position with the patient lying down, or from
the 8 o'clock position with the patient sitting upright (or,
the 4 o'clock position if the clinician is left-handed).
4. To ease placement, with the tabs pointing downward, the
operator should grasp the inner ring by reaching
through the outer ring. The inner ring should be held
between the thumb and index finger and pressed
together slightly (see Figure 2).
Fig 2: Correct hold on the inner ring with thumb and index finger. The
ring is slightly compressed in the process.
5. The slightly compressed inner ring is then inserted into
the buccal corridor on one side, so that the elastic
component embraces the corner of the mouth and the
outer ring is still located extraorally (see Figure 3).
Fig 3: The inner ring is inserted between the teeth and the
corner of the mouth.
6. As soon as the OptraGate is securely in place on one
side, the other side is inserted in the same manner by
slightly bending it (see Figure 4).
Fig 4: The inner ring is positioned behind the two corners
of the mouth.
7. Subsequently, the inner ring is placed behind the upper
and lower lips and thus OptraGate assumes its final,
stable position (see Figure 5).
